Just a quickie, and not the post I've been trying to make for the last few days (with added photos), but because there is probably going to be yet another round of teeth-gnashing about it... Lj's new terms of service, of course.

I'm not entirely happy with the new terms of service, but only because I can't actually read the original version of them. To put that in context, however, I wasn't entirely happy with the old terms of service (the US-based ones) where I was also supposed to sign all my rights to a governmental jurisdiction that I wasn't allowed to have any say in, and that often legislated against things (ironically freedoms) that I believed in.

There was an element of protection via EU laws, some of which officially superceded some of the US laws I was less comfortable with, as a member of the EU. That is also shortly going to be taken away from me (and any other UK lj-ers).

On top of that, of course, the recent change in the US government has been for the worse, regarding people's freedoms and rights, and I feel less comfortable with it now than I did previously.

So - when it comes down to it, I don't feel any worse off, I've signed the agreement and will still be here. I'm hoping that other people will be too, but sadly I suspect not. And now I have to dash to work, but I hope I see you around!

FullCalendarHad a notification in my email that an lj user I didn't know had posted to [livejournal.com profile] discoveredinalj, so I clicked through to have a look at the entry - and what did I get? This community has been suspended. Reasons for this suspension can only be discussed with the owner of the community - which I'm not, by the way, that's [livejournal.com profile] empty_mirrors, who I can't seem to get in touch with any more. Noooooo! What was going on? Why would they suspend Dialj? Was this...?

So I had a wee flurry of panic (while Riverford delivered and I went to open the gate for him, and we talked about how cold and frosty and beautiful it was), went to import the comm to Dreamwidth in the hope it could be sucked up even though suspended, and which I was going to wait until the end of Discovered in a Christmas Card to do, but is now in progress), and stared at the screen in consternation for a few minutes.

Did various checks, and opened Dialj on another tab from my bookmarks - and it's still there, safe and sound and mostly harmless. Turned out, the spammer who'd tried to post had their account suspended, and it must have been a glitch in lj that gave me the suspension page for the comm rather than the spammer when I first went to check, just because of the timing - phew! Not only is the comm safe, but lj is actively protecting us from the spammers, and I've just seen it in action.

But bloody hellfire! I mean - it shouldn't matter really, in the scheme of things it's just some internet pages with stories and pretty pictures that the authors and creators have saved and often posted elsewhere, but that comm and I have been through alot together - creation and joy and friends and attack and near-abandonment and desperate scrabbles to stay alive! Coming up with new challenges was fun but lots of work when it was Josey and me together, and then even more when it was just me. We always redesigned the comm, and used a new banner for new challenges, and I've managed to keep all those little things up, although I've stopped posting new challenges much, since so many writers head for the Big Bang these days, and it keeps them busy for pretty much the entire year - and even writers who aren't busy there and have signed up for Dialj challenges mostly don't manage to post (often including me, though as always I have better hopes for a new year).

I've always known I'll be sad when my comms end, because their lj-comm-life brings people together a little bit (and stabs at them until they bleed sometimes, but that's also life, I guess), and that's a good thing, that always makes me smile a bit. We've been through alot, [livejournal.com profile] discoveredinalj and me (and [livejournal.com profile] ci5hq and me, even more in a different way). Everything dies naturally in the end, and sometimes things need to be put to sleep, but life is life where it still exists - and I reckon there's a bit of life in these old girls yet.

So I'm glad Dialj didn't end today. *g* Look at all those lovely Pros-y people in our calendar! And here's some old lj banners featuring our lovely lads to celebrate!

It has been a day - and I felt the need to go out with my camera once or twice. *g* The first time was when I got up - it was a bit chilly this morning! It was only 1C when I checked again around sunset, and I suspect it never got much higher, though it was nice and blue-sky-ed for most of the day.

The second time I went for a tromp around the hacktrack around sunset, and the third time was when work was being impossible and I wanted to play with something shiny. Then I remembered that the moon and evening star had been pretty shiny the night before, so... *g*

Must admit was feeling a bit glum... )

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure whether this has been there for a while, and I just unticked it when it first came along, without bothering to explore, and now it's expanded to catch people's attention when they post, or whether it really is a new feature now. Either way - huh! It's a Related Posts feature, which shows you either 3, 6 or 9 related posts (the most recent posts by default, but you can set it to tags, which is quite useful) at the bottom of the current post. I couldn't see it working with my lj in either preview or on my friends list page, but when I go into the actual post, there it is!

2016-05-08 RelatedPostsThingiePostingThis is the bit that I see now, when it comes to posting, and the first pic is (obviously) the results if you choose three pics. I can see it being useful when you're exploring lj, and maybe to remember the last post that you tagged with a certain tag... for keeping track of things a bit, maybe.

Oh, and it works in retrospect too - I could go back and use it on my last Once Upon a Time Challenge post. Ve-e-ry interesting...

Hmmn - what do you think? Has anyone been using it? D'you think you will?

So, the world is shrinking, we know this. In a good way? Not always... and it's growing too, and that's not always in a good way either. And one of the things that I miss, that I really really miss, is seeing the breath of people in my flist! I don't want summaries, I don't want the blurb before I buy the book, what I have always loved about lj is that we can see each other, and hear and read and connect with each other. An lj flist should be full of pictures, and stories and thoughts and ideas, shining like gems from my laptop screen, and it should be full of the words and images that people are breathing about the things they love - it shouldn't just be a list of links and summaries!

Just think how much more beautiful the page you're looking at right now would be with the actual pictures of our lads right there, shining out at us. I know it's easiest to post to somewhere like A03 and then give a link, I know you get to keep all the kudos in one place so it can be counted, but... but the life of the internet is here, in the places people can connect, not in the archives. I love archives, I adore them - but they're the quiet, remembering pause in life, they're not the living of life now. Please, everyone, post to the archives, but bring your life back onto the pages of lj too so that we can adore it out loud and with each other!

And that said (cos I just had to!) - today I ventured out again, and found spring struggling against the grey skies in an almost-orangery, and found a bathroom in a cupboard. There's a little bit of me wants one of those - but it's the bit of me that imagines she lives somewhere like Montacute House to start with, so I guess I'll stick to my bathroom-in-an-entire-room. *g*

Yesterday...
2016-02-26 Night
Taken rather late at night cos I suddenly realised that I had no photo for the day. But taken, if not posted. *g* (Odd day yesterday - felt better, but felt lightheaded...)

Okay, still a bit lightheaded today, but - much more alive again! I went out! I was good though, and didn't go far on my first day out, even though I wanted to. *g*
2016-02-27 01Wells 2016-02-27 02Wells
I ended up just in Wells, and... um... even there I ended up mostly in the library for... um... four hours or so. I was family-treeing! I've always meant to take advantage of free Ancestry.co.uk on library computers, and - it was every bit as addictive as I thought it might be. Luckily the computers weren't busy. And I found out the name of the ship my grandad went to Canada on - and that he didn't go alone, as I'd always thought! Then I went and stocked up at the supermarket, and home for dinner and The Voice. *g*

And some funky sky... )

On the other hand - my lj is broken! I still can't access either my menus or my comments (except one by one via direct reply-to-comment links on my email notifications. So I shall do that from now on, and dig my old notifications out of the bin and start catching up that way too, but... *sighs*) I've been keeping an eye on lj support, and its definitely an xColibur issue - my old site scheme that I love, but that was on its way out 10 years ago when I first got my lj... I would even give in and change my site scheme to Horizon (or maybe Vertigo, actually) except that I'm not sure whether lj would take that to mean "yes, I'll use the new site layout now!" and I'd lose my lovely customised flist page in the doings. Anyone have any idea?

It's very frustrating - I can see comments in other ljs etc., no worries, it's only my own I can't see in my lj - waaah! Cross fingers they'll fix it, even though they don't officially support xColibur any more...

In other news - bad, bad news about Samhain Publishing, which is closing down. Dammit! Sounds like they're doing it carefully and relatively slowly, so books aren't just suddenly disappearing. Heads-up too - I hear there's going to be a 40% sale on the 29th Feb, so stock up on K.J. Charles and Joanna Chambers if you've not already... *sighs sadly*

And finally... well, just, hello. *g* Touching lots of wood and hugging all the trees, maybe I can get back to normal now. Now where was I...? *vbg*

Actually I'm slightly early posting this - it was the evening when I made my lj, and Alaska is nine hours behind lads' time. ...because I've just discovered that not only is the third Charm of Magpies book out in paperback much sooner than I expected (it's only just been released as an e-book late last year) but the new Jackdaw, which is in the universe, and apparently features a policeman who should know better, a thief who may never learn, Victorian morals, heated encounters, and a very annoyed Stephen Day. looks like it's going to be simultaneously released in paperback. Yeay and thrice yeay! *g*

And to celebrate, here's the list of all the Magpie Universe so far, just so I have it all in one place. The shorts are free, if you want to sample her...

1) The Smuggler and the Warlord (set before all other stories, but read those first so it makes sense) (free online very short)
2) The Magpie Lord - e-book and paperback
3) Interlude with Tattoos (free online very short)
4) A Case of Possession - e-book and paperback
5) A Case of Spirits (free online and included in ACoP paperback)
6) Flight of Magpies (e-book and I've just found out it's out now in paperback - whooohooo! *runs to Wordery*)
7) The Feast of Stephen (free online short)
8) Jackdaw (not Lucien/Stephen, but they apparently appear - same universe, character from Flight of Magpies. And I've just found out it's going to be released as a paperback at the same time - whoooohooooooo! (Even though I've already pre-ordered the e-book... *g*)

(Also yeay, because my lj fixed itself overnight, and my flist is no longer scrolling horizontally! Well, not until someone posted an absolutely huge image outside a cut... I wish lj would go back to defaulting images to smaller sizes instead of the original, cos they end up enormous if they're big to start with and people don't remember to change them manually...))

Right - I built a bed over the weekend, now I'm off to build just one more bookcase... *g*

Has anyone else's lj stretched itself really wide, as if someone's posted a huge image without a cut, but there's no such image (or anything else that might be causing it) on your flist page? This is very strange and I don't like it because I have to scroll horizontally to read anyone's posts! Or are you having other weird things? I'm dreading the day when it's something that won't adapt to my old style and layout and I have to change...

(Sorry, the pic was just to catch your attention. Despite my best intentions I've been browsing Victorian pictures on Pinterest so far this morning... it's research! I have lost all ability to reply to comments in my own lj - there's just no reply button anymore. I shall cross my fingers and hold my thumbs it comes back soon, because I wanted to reply to comments!

Also, my style has gone... gappy. I use an old theme, XColibur, because when they changed it I didn't like how much bigger and more like a child writing in crayon they made the menus - and I didn't want the drop-downs, I liked having everything in two neat horizontal lines in the menu bar. But now my menu bar is all gappy. I the links are still there, but they've gone invisible and seem to have been shrunk... it may be that my old-fangled days are catching up with me. If you see how that might work... *headdesk*

I'm going to have to work instead... with my fingers crossed and my thumbs held. Typing may be tricky. Also there is no incentive to comment to this post if I'm saying that I can't write back - well, if that ever was an incentive... it's all about my sparkling conversation, I know... *g*

Here, better have some lads in lieu of... well, anything really.

Eeep - that was bracing! My image posting pop-up has gone all awry too, and was missing the post button. I took a blind leap of faith that I wasn't about to delete the internet, and pressed the spot that it looked like a button had once been...

I wonder if kids anywhere still say that for the first of the month... I wonder why we said it for the first of the month...? (You had to say it first thing to someone when you met them, before you said anything else...) Anyone else remember that? My brain did one of those odd things just now, and dragged it out of apparently nowhere (aka the deep dark depths of my memories, I guess... *g*)

November!

I've written 21 words for NaNoWriMo.

*g* Up until last night I still didn't know what I was going to write, and with the current faffing about over lj, and dayjob being ridiculously mental (partly cos I was away last week, partly cos there's a new (additional) boss and partly... well, just cos it is) I didn't have a minute yesterday to finally think about it and decide, as planned. Part of me wants to write something original, to take to the Writing Group, another part of me thinks this'll be a good way to get my DialjDecember story written, and Tuesday's part of me wondered if I might split the difference, cheat a bit, and do both.

But I seem to be writing Two Go Adventuring Again. *g*

My plan is that NaNoWriMo has worked for me before, nothing else has this year (even begging everyone's help here, thank you and sorry it didn't, somehow...) so maybe NaNoWriMo will be my last chance to get going again... It might just help that I've given up one of my time-consuming jobs for the month. I hope!

Nice to see a post from [livejournal.com profile] lj_releases this morning, about the new friends page - information missing from the original post includes:
- you can opt out of infinite scrolling on your friends page, and have the same pagination as now
- there will be an option to change background/images and font

Rumours that cropped up via people worriedly trawling various Russian ljs included the idea that paid accounts would be cancelled next year - they won't be, or not exactly. They're apparently going to make one basic account level, and rather than paying for "an account" which gives extra features, you'll be able to pay for individual features themselves. This sounds quite good to me right now - there's lots of features included in my paid account that I've never used and am unlikely to, so I'd be happy to opt out of paying for those ones!

Aaaand... thank you everyone who voted about my name, yestereday! *g* It was neck-and-neck for a while there, but in the end I went for [personal profile] byslantedlight. I did the import journal thing, and added my banner to a fairly randomly chosen style (which insists on imposing my lj name across the banner, but I'm not taking time to muck about with choosing other styles right now). But I'm not going anywhere unless I have to... *g*

Meanwhile, November means NaNoWriMo, a whole month off Job 3, that there's only a week to go until the Pros Writing Holiday - wheeeee! - autumn leaves and grey skies, and cool clean, rain-washed air, and that there will be posts very shortly (no, really... *g*) about the various Pros-y December activities. Yeay! *g*

Aaaaaand... the lads!

How's your November looking? *g*
byslantedlight: (BD shadows (Empty_Mirrors))
So... there I was, thinking how clever I'd been for November - I've actually put Job 3 on hold for a month so that I can hopefully: a) recover the use of my eyes and non-headachey head somewhat; b) have a go at NaNoWriMo to try and get writing again; c) because I'm away for just over a week in November anyway - Pros Writing holiday yeay!; and d) probably for other reasons I can barely remember right now... possibly to do with my ability to remember, and be sane... *g* Oh, and cos there's lots of [livejournal.com profile] discoveredinalj and [livejournal.com profile] ci5hq and other December-y Pros-y things to sort out! And what happens? My gorgeous lj begins one of its periodic implosions, and this one might even be the one that prompts me to do things like create a mirror journal...

...which I've just been to do, and even that isn't quite as simple as you'd think... When I originally signed up for lj, I wanted slantedlight as my user name (well, I wanted other things before that, but they'd all gone too), but some country and western chick had already taken that (and her last post was about a week before I signed up!), so I decided on byslantedlight, cos then I could write as Slantedlight and my lj would by... geddit? *g* Only over at dw, both names are currently free (unless someone charming pinches one or both as I write this...) I know some people think of me as just Slantedlight anyway (from my Pros-writing name), and although I still like the cleverness (hee - geddit? *g*) of byslantedlight, I don't think I really mind which I am, and I have absolutely no decision-head right now, or at least not left over for this, so....

[Poll #1875786]

So anyway - for all the time I've taken "off" Job 3, there's still too much to do to have signed up for NaNoWriMo... but I did anyway. And did I mention that Dayjob has exploded into a nasty mess of daily busy-ness (I really shouldn't be here on lj right now, but... I am...) *sighs*

Also - Oh - I've been switched back to the new posting window (which I'd chosen, but which had vanished on me for some reason....) which reminds me of things that I do like about lj, that might not be on dw... Oh, and my icon-alphabetisation is back - yeay! *sighs more*

I thought I'd try out lj's new posting window - I see the html version is now almost identical to what's now called the Visual Editor... but hopefully with the added capacity to accept html code - let's try, using the code and then using the button they provide... Looks the same here... thing is, I've got used to typing the code, so I don't want to have to let go of the keyboard to insert code, it'll slow down my rambling... *g* As ever I like the User-Pic-Chooser now (yeay, it's finally available on posts too!). The rest of it looks as if they've really just rearranged what was at the bottom a bit - mood, music and location are now beside the window (actually that's good, I might remember to use them - in fact now I have!)... oh, Tags are under alphabetical sections... and for some reason "aeroplanes" comes under "aurora"... hmmn... The font I'm typing in right now is a little small... But... I think I'll stay switched to the new version, see if I get used to it... I think the plus-changes outweigh the ones I'm less keen on...

Shame they're not on their own there, but I think that's a pic we don't see very often, isn't it... Whilst I was away for a week, I actually put down the Philip Rickman book that I was reading, and picked up first Sebastian's Siren series, which I've not read for a whilst, and then Kitty Fisher's Paper Flowers, and now I'm wanting to re-read all my favourite Pros-fic again... got to love comfort-reading! Which is presumably linked to [livejournal.com profile] llywela13's post with link yesterday about re-watching TV shows being good for you. Well we knew that... *g* And I actually did watch In the Public Interest and Stirring of Dust last night, whilst I was doing some mending - the only trouble was that sewing meant I wasn't watching as closely, when what I wanted was to see our lads together. I did catch one moment though, which I might post about to [livejournal.com profile] the_safehouse... one of those looks between the lads, where I suddenly wondered what was really going on... *g*

What else... just rambling really, and resolutions to do things, whilst I'm perhaps slightly quieter...

I put in an Lj Support request last night, asking about the change to image sizes, and when I woke up this morning, there was a reply...

"The new image sizes when images are inserted using the Insert Image function of the Rich Text Editor is an intentional new change that was recently released. If you would prefer to have your images display at the size that they used to, you can make the following edit to your image URLs:

http://pics.livejournal.com/USERNAME/pic/IMAGENAME/s640x480
to
http://pics.livejournal.com/USERNAME/pic/IMAGENAME/s320x240

At this time, there is no way to manually select this sizing preference when you insert your images, and I apologize for that inconvenience. If you would like to suggest that LiveJournal offer a way to do this, you can submit this idea to the Suggestions community [http://community.livejournal.com/suggestions/] using the method described at [http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=164]."

So just after I've paid for extra storage at lj so that I can post pictures without faffing around, they've changed the system so that in order to post pictures side by side I'm going to have to sodding faff around! I'm annoyed! And there was no announcement/warning, so that when someone quite reasonably posted pics side by side yesterday, as normal, it threw my whole lj off and I had to go scrolling horizontally all day - yuck.

I liked the smaller sized pictures, it was exactly why I chose to buy lj extra storage rather than use Flickr or Photobucket - I could post a set of pics side by side, without a cut, nice and easily. They could be seen clearly and if people wanted to see them more clearly, then we could double-click. It was simple, it was efficient... And now there's going to have to be faffing, or else I don't post as many pics. I tell you, I'm going back to pen and paper and darkroom chemicals if they insist on making technology more of a faff rather than less...

...because it might be that the image problem is confined to comms, or to a particular comm... But I shall post a Pros-y pic so it's not too upsetting if it goes wrong... or right... *g* So, let's see what happens...

There - does that look right, or is it throwing your lj off completely...?
