On this day, ten years ago, down in a basement flat in Fairbanks Alaska, a girl opened a livejournal account... and all because of these blokes...(will you forgive me an uncut picspam, just this once? *g*)

I do love how Doyle tucks himself into his Bodie in that last picture... *g*)

I was going to think of something proper to say... )

Actually I'm slightly early posting this - it was the evening when I made my lj, and Alaska is nine hours behind lads' time. Maybe I'll manage something more Pros-y/fandom-ish/interesting tomorrow when I'm (hopefully!) awake again. *g* Still - for those of you who did - thanks for putting up with me!

Who was a good little bunny, and got up early, and was at her desk and working actually before nine o'clock this morning? Me, that's who! And who has been working through all that time, and yet is only just about to start on the actual bit of the job that I get paid for...? *sighs* - me...

On the bright side - rain! Relative cool! So much nicer than the nasssty 28.8C that we had on Saturday, all humid and heavy with wanting to rain but not quite managing it... I did nip down to Stourhead for a wander around the gardens, cos I'm usually up in the house and yet it's famous for its gardens. Oddly few flowers, though the lake was nice of course - and there's already an autumnal tree by the pantheon (which I'll be conservation cleaning later this week, btw, as a change... *g*)

Sunday was all quiet and tucked-up-inside, which I hadn't meant to do, but was nice. I was going to go to Bath and splash out on a new camera, because all the way around Stourhead I wanted to take better pictures - but... laziness. And then I remembered this morning that the current cashback offer runs out on... ack, Wednesday! So if I'm gonna do it, 'twere best 'twere done quickly... i.e. tomorrow. Which means getting on with work again after this posting-break...

But there was writing this weekend too - yeay (including a next installment for the still-ongoing [livejournal.com profile] discoveredinalj Round Robin Challenge *g*). And writing-research. And I finally watched Tripod tells the Story of Tosswinkle the Pirate (Not Very Well) and it was every bit as good as I was expecting. *g* Meanwhile, have a Lonesome Gregarious Cowboy to cheer up Monday morning...

Did you have a good weekend?

Not only that, but I went to archery - and shot rubbish, but it was at new distances - 30m and then 50m - instead of 20! Every second time I go there's a different condition to shoot under though, I don't have time to... to settle into it - ack. On the bright side, chappy didn't shout at me this time, and was in fact quite friendly. Also I came home and actually finished that piece of work, so now I'm a day ahead, which is where I wanted to be so that I can have Thursday "off" (not really off, just off on unpaid work - induction for NT volunteering... though they will teach me how to claim my travel expenses, and I think I might at this one cos it's a proper half-hour's drive away, not ten minutes up the road like Wimpole was).

Okay, and now I'm rabbiting on when the other thing I meant to post was this - today's NASA apod. I love this...

Credit to Damia Bouic You can click through to the big version, but if you can't be bothered - on the left is the sunset from Earth, and on the right is the sunset from Mars! And the Martian sunset is blue, not red/orange like ours! Just imagine if you could see it though, even once... *sighs for a future that isn't here yet*

It was raining. In fact it was bucketing down so that I could barely see the road, the rain paused just as I got there, with just enough time to wander around and scribble a postcard to mum, and then again with the bucketing!

What is it with Salisbury Plain that its always raining hard there? Mind you, heading northwards but west towards Glastonbury turned everything a thousand shades of silver, so that was rather fab too... *g*

Oh, the west - it feels like coming home, every time. I'm just somehow on the wrong side entirely!

...to decide to run off and find a different world for the weekend.

I'm bored, and was even too useless to organise that exotic foreign long weekend I'd been contemplating, but what I can do is head west. Just for the weekend. So I'm gonna. *g*

There will be my favourite Stonehenge, my favourite Glastonbury, and I am going to spend tonight holed up in a b&b with my laptop, probably no internet except on my phone, and writing.

I'm just about to leave. Wanna come with, via more interesting pics than the one above?

Last weekend, in a fit of boredom, I took myself to one of our local National Trust places - Anglesey Abbey, which I adore for its winter garden, and is famous for its snowdrops. I've not often been just after snowdrop season though, and it turned out that mid-spring was full of colour and gorgeousness...

I adore these copper birch trees - I could stand staring at them forever...

Although silver birch is also... )

Happy Winter Solstice - the days are getting longer again, yeay!

Also, a brief grump because I've just tried to upload my Dialj story to the Automated Hatstand, and been blocked from it - it has to be "validated", the message said? Has anyone else had this recently whilst posting to the AH? (I can understand it might be a spam-protector, but I wish I'd known in advance it was going to take longer to post - waaah!) I've got a pdf version ready to go too, but I can't upload it until I get home to my software (cos I also tweaked slightly this morning, which I thought would be fine cos I was posting first to AH, and...), and I don't really want to post in a zillion chapters to lj, so... I'm going to have to wait until AH gets back to me (oh yikes, have just thought - that's going to come up for every chapter, isn't it...) I was being so organised too and now my Solstice Day timing is completely foiled by the archive being on... whichever Canadian time zone it's on...*g*

*headdesk* It was all going so well, too...

And I missed the lunar eclipse cos Cambs. was covered in cloud. *grumps again*

On the bright side - *takes deep breath* - there's only today and tomorrow left at work and then I'm offfffff for Christmas! And New Year! And a bit afterwards! Yeay!

Pic from the NASA pic of the day, of course...

Well, just... stuff (and photo limits and experimenting with flikr - let's see how that goes...) getting in the way of finishing... but I will! I'm determined! Not least cos the Dread Marking effectively starts today, and so there's no chance until next Monday at the earliest, after this. So, back in time we go...

Sunday morning (waah, over a week ago now!) dawned with a plan that involved coffee in the nearby proper town (cos we knew the way there and that something should be open), which was of course taken in the multicoloured seats of an amusement arcade establishment, watching Beyonce on the telly... ah, the English seaside! Although I have to say, the coffee was good, and I had a pineapple and coconut danish pastry thing, which was yum. Then we navigated our way back to the carpark by keeping an eye out for the bouncy castle... *g*

Off at last, but our Holiday Of Being Thwarted was still on track - we'd planned to go and see the Blue Pool, and we wiggled down all the wiggly roads to get there (in convoy, cos we had a car each to move now *headdesk*) only to find that it was extortionately priced for a potential ten minute walk-and-glance-at-the-pretty-water... Day trips only, apparently! So we stared at the map again and made yet another new plan - Cloud Hill! (Via a petrol station found from the roundabout which turned out to be the second one not the first one and we were really short of petrol but we made it just in time and phew! Then onto Cloud Hill.)

Right! Have re-potted a courgette plant (poor courgette plant), baked cheese and golden-syrup biscuits to take with lunch tomorrow, downloaded and started experimenting with Google Chrome (cos I'm tired of my lj posts jumping around, and lj is just blaming IE and my Xcolibur site scheme for it - and I don't want to give up Xcolibur for the other chunky-looking styles!) and put dinner on. Back to holidaying, I think... *g*

So... it's Saturday morning! Fortifying ourselves with coffee and a Dorset Cream Tea (apparently you're supposed to put the cream on first) we set off from Corfe Castle...

So... holidays are fun - wouldn't it be fab to be on holiday forever? Except that you wouldn't be, of course, cos you'd take all that extra time and do all the things that you say you want to do when you're on holiday - research this local history, write that story, and read and read and read...

One day when I win the lottery... When I enter the lottery... In the meantime, I'll settle for posting pics again and pretending that I'm still there, just for one more night... *sighs*

Last Friday, I found myself in Dorset with [livejournal.com profile] cornishcat, because it turns out to be about halfway between where we both live, with a tent, two cars, and some sunshine... We set up in an actual proper official campsite, which I've never done before, although I kept remembering that I totally fibbed about not having been camping since I was twelve, cos I've camped while doing archaeology, and while drive-awaying in the US, and underneath the aurora borealis in Denali National Park... just never in an official tent with, you know - other people camping at the same place... *g* First things first - off in search of a rather late lunch, which we found at a pub in the village, with just one or two halves of the local beer because, you know, it's friendly to partake of the local breweries, and good for the economy. *g*

Then it was off on a rather lovely walk over the fields, and via much chatting to the sheep, down to the sea...

Have just had the loveliest, most perfect and magical holiday I've had for ages - and come to think of it, I've had some lovely holidays recently, so this is saying something... Went wandering with my friend M to some of my favourite places... (and what follows is a rambling tale with pics, probably more to cheer me up about being back here than it is cos I think anyone should read it, though if you're very bored today... *g*)
