The Advent Drabbles

23rd December

They stood shoulder to shoulder, tea in hand, staring silently at what the calendar had uncovered.

He was so young he was almost unrecognisable - and that wasn't a disguise, wasn't work, that was him. His parents were spending Christmas without him, his girlfriend looking at photos and crying, his friends drank and danced around a shade.

"Life's short," Doyle said, tea steaming, forgotten, near his lips.

Bodie nodded, a strangely brittle movement. "We've only got one."

"Shouldn't waste it, then?"

A question.

Bodie shook his head, sure now. "No."

They looked at each other then, put their tea down.

Today is the first day of my proper Christmas holiday, and I am just about to get in wee Temeraire and head across and down to the South West - Devon for Christmas again, wheeeee! Tem has never come with me on such a long adventure - the furthest she's been is London - so cross fingers that she's up for it. Cross fingers too that the roads are clear and good and I'll have time to stop at Stonehenge hopefully-still-in-the-snow on the way!

This is how my world looked last night, full of wrapping, and de-enveloping, and laundry and the moon all huge and pale copper as she rose - and also another epic fudge-making bout, which is improving, and maybe next time will turn out just the way my mum (and me, at the time!) used to make it... It's still pretty tasty, though... *g*

Aaand... now I'm just putting off lugging all my stuff down to the car. *g* Happy Thursday, and hopefully the next time I'm around it's from the Devon seaside... or at least a cosy house nearby. *g*

Hold Your Breath, Sunshine

A ship is safe in the harbour - but that's not what ships are for.

Should've.
Would've.
Didn't. Didn't. Didn't.
