Doyle managed an appreciative smirk, having been alerted by a couple of early arrivals that the Old Man had come up with a joke. (

Happy Good Friday! It's hot cross bun day - yeay! Oh, rats, that reminds me of something too... I started this in 2011, and it's technically a wip, but it does stand alone, though it doesn't really go anywhere - hence wip... it
was going somewhere. Maybe if I post it here I'll be all inspired to write later today...
( Have a wee Pros snippet... )I'm actually supposed to be working, but I thought I'd come and have a ramble here instead (obviously) cos it feels like a holiday (it
is a holiday - it's Good Friday bank holiday), but only because I sort of
made it feel like a holiday. Hot cross buns are on sale all year around now - with the cross on them and everything - which feels like a shame to me, cos now there's nothing special to look forward to today (well, unless you're properly religious, I suppose!) - but I only buy them today, cos I want that specialness. I tend to associate high days and holidays with a tradition of some kind, and today is hot cross buns...
Out of curiosity I asked Landlady's Daughter what today was a holiday for, and she had no clue at all - she was even sketchy on the fact that it was Easter at all. She's been off for two week's holiday of course, but as far as I know they're still technically
the Easter holidays - surely there should be
some meaning there, religious or not... But Landlady pointed out that "we're not religious" in explanation, and I thought
well neither am I, but I know
that the reason there's two week's school holiday now is cos it's Easter (and the holidays fit into that timing). Mind you, I think it's the first time I've seen the two weeks being
before the Easter weekend, rather than with Easter right in the middle... Anyway, to me it wasn't so much weekend of religion as a weekend for tradition - hot cross buns on Friday, family Easter eggs on Sunday, and the Easter bunny on Monday. Am I living somewhere unusual now though, or is the tradition being lost in general...? If there's anyone out there reading this waffle - do you do hot cross buns today?
