Sorry for the massive reply-delay...

And yet the series makes him out as someone who stands up for the native Africans at first, virtually risking his life so that they'll be paid and treated fairly. I've not read any histories of his life, so I don't know how accurate this is - and there's perhaps a hint that he's really doing it for the power he knows it will give him over the other diamond miners if he's the one with the most willing workforce, but...

They do emphasise his early dedication to Britain and imperialism though...
