Basically, plotty stories are good - there has to be a plot - but the story should be about the characters. It's a fine distinction and can be hard to pull off. But taking time to let the characters react as people is a good start! So I appreciated Deep Breath because it used the plot to tell a story about characters, which is far more my cup of tea than, for example Time of the Doctor, which used the characters to tell a story about a plot.
