Yes, it''s a superstition - that the ghosts of people who will die in the coming year can be seen from the church lych-gate (or on the local corpse road) on a particular day each year. For the life of me I can't remember which one, and I've tucked one of the books away and think I've loaned out the other one that would tell me! But yeah... *g*

Kate Mosse is such a renowned author that I really felt I should be in sympathy with her characters in some way - or at least one of them - but it wasn't to be... That said, that's just me, so you might feel entirely differently! *g*
