Hmmn - another of lj's features that I've never actually used - the share button! So let's give it a whirl, because I'm quite excited about this... *g*

My Patreon is live!

After a bunch more talking and tweaking, I’ve decided to concentrate on Astreiant for now. I’m doing a simple monthly appeal: if enough people sign up to bring in $100 a month, I’ll post a sketch from Astreiant. It can be anything — a bit of drama, a character’s background, daily life, one of Old Steen’s sea-stories as Rathe remembers is — but it will be at least 500 words. These are bits and pieces that are unlikely to make it a novel, or will do so only in a severely edited form. They’re like the seven studies of folded hands that you see in an artist’s sketchbook: one of them may end up in the completed portrait, but it won’t be the same as the sketch. If the page reaches $250 a month, I’ll post a second sketch, also of at least 500 words. If the page reaches $500 a month, I’ll add an almanac entry — at least 250 words from my notes, almanacs, and imaginary reference books. I might include horoscopes and maps here, too.

I’ve set the minimum pledge at $1 a month, and for that, you get access to all the Patron posts. At $2 a month, I’ll send you an Astreiant-themed thank-you card — nothing fancy, but drawn from the dozens of stamps and images I’ve collected that remind me of this world. At $5 a month, you’ll get all of the above plus the chance to offer a prompt for a sketch. If you want to pledge $10 a month, I’ll throw in a signed copy of any of the Points books that you might be missing, and if you want to pledge $100 a month (this would be extraordinarily generous, to say the least!) I’ll make sure you get a complete set of the books currently out, and I’ll send you each new novel as it comes out for as long as you stay subscribed. Since you’ll be subscribing by the month rather than by the story, you’ll never risk paying more per month than you intended.

Why do this? For the simplest of reasons: money buys writing time. Income that can be calculated in advance, like the royalties from those newer publishers who pay by the month rather than every six months, buys slightly more writing time precisely because it can be relied on. The more I can raise here, the more time I’ll have to spend on my writing, and the sooner Point of Sighs can go to Lethe.

And some rambling from me... *g* )

I'm curious - what does anyone else think of this sort of thing? (Quite apart from - yeay, Astreaint! *vbg*)

Erk, yes I should still be working... *sighs*

Hello! It's the Monday after Christmas, and it's a bank holiday Monday, and after three days of mostly sitting on my couch and reading books, interspersed with watching telly, I think I should probably try and be a bit more active today... *g* So - a post isn't a bad place to start, I think? Hope you all had good days over the break - and still are having! Hello. *g*

(My Pros-y Christmas-y view from the couch... Hurrah Pros, and ProsFandomCards, and thank you all! *g*)

There's been reading... )

2015-12-25 ChristmasSpecialWatching telly... )

What else? Astreiant fanfic! Three new ones - A Life in Star Signs, Wicked Grace and Four Things Philip..., all by Anonymous (I suspect the same one, but not sure). And of course lots of Pros that I'm catching up (too slowly) on. So much to read in the world, so little time... *g*

So now I'm at the bit between Christmas and New Year where you're thinking about all the possibilities and potential that next year has. What will I do? What's my plan? This year has been - well, okay, but it's involved far too much work and whinging about work, and not enough brilliant things in the world! I lost all my weekends away and holidays a couple of years ago, and I don't seem to have replaced them yet - so I guess that's part of my plan for 2016. And I'm enjoying reading still (well, as ever *g*), so more of that please. *g* But what else...? I'm toying with the idea of doing a 365 photography project (where you take a photo and show it to people every day for a year - guess who that would be. *g*), cos I seem to have put down my camera a bit- no reason other than work and all, really. There's a course I've got my eye on, not far away. There's bookbinding. Fiddling. National Trusting. Those all seem sort of background things though. What d'you reckon? What should I do in 2016? All ideas and thoughts welcome!

And what are you thinking of doing in 2016?

I'm not really here I'm really working (I am), but in a break I was allowed to do email, and there was chat about fic and all, and I got to thinking of things in a roundabout way (who, me? *g*) and I suddenly realised what had been bugging me about the revised fic headers over at [livejournal.com profile] the_safehouse.

I noticed this last time (-ish) I posted a fic to the comm, and went to the user profile page to copy and paste their headers - they've taken off the disclaimer requirement. I actually commented on it somewhere (but not on my last fic post, and I can't find it now), and [livejournal.com profile] kiwisue (*name-drops blatantly so that she gets a ping about my post here and might come and remind me... * *g*) said that the comm mods had decided to drop it cos it wasn't actually applicable - which I took to mean that it wasn't going to get anyone out of any hot water that someone might throw at them about using someone else's characters in a story. And to be fair I'd never really thought the disclaimers would get anyone out of legal wrangles over whether we can write Pros or not, so I just thought hmmmn and moved on. But something niggled at me, and I couldn't work out what. I put it down to always hating it when things that are traditional are lost, although that still didn't really make sense - but I've finally worked it out!

I never really thought that fandom disclaimers would protect anyone from legal disputes about our adapting other people's characters for our stories. If someone wants to get all legal about that kind of thing, then the odds are high that they're going to win cos we live in a possessive, money-grabbing world. Well, we do. *sighs* But... but-but-but... what I did deep-down think about the disclaimers was that it was the way we fans acknowledged the work of the original creators. Okay, so we were acknowledging it and saying "I'm-just-gonna-borrow-it-without-asking-but-surely-you-won't-mind-and-in-the-case-of-Pros-will-probably-never-notice-(or-all-the-money-you're-making-from-our-corner-of-keeping-your-old-work-alive-and-in-demand) - but we were remembering their part in what we do, and acknowledging it. And I actually think that's important...

I think it's important cos from the barista who makes our coffee for us, to the car that paused for us to get out onto a busy road, to the postie delivering our mail, to the person who wrote the stories that we adore and gave us hours of fun - people deserve acknowledgement and thanks just as human courtesy. And we do do that in fandom - we say thanks to other fans for writing fic, or creating art, or just for posting the pictures we like to look at. We know that it's not just polite but that it's a good thing to do and that it makes people feel good. And I hate to think that we're losing our way of saying thanks to Clemens and the scriptwriters and everyone else in the original Pros team. It's not that I think they might see it (actually I hope they won't) but I think the thanks and acknowledgement is important for our karma and souls.

Basically - if one of them saw a fic posted without the disclaimer, they'd see someone appropriating their original ideas (albeit for positive reasons) for their own use. If they saw a fic posted with the disclaimer, at least they'd know that their own part in the creation of that fic had been acknowledged, even if it wasn't by specific name. So... so yeah. I think I'm gonna keep posting a disclaimer, even if it's not required in a comm. Maybe I'll word it differently, mind, having thought this through. An acknowledgement-claimer.. *g*

What d'you reckon? To disclaim or not to disclaim...? *g*

(Have a picture as a reward for reading all that... *g*)

From today's apod at Nasa - Have you seen a panorama from another world lately? ...this one sweeps across the magnificent desolation of the Apollo 11 landing site on the Moon's Sea of Tranquility. Taken by Neil Armstrong looking out his window of the Eagle Lunar Module, the frame at the far left is the first picture taken by a person on another world.

The first picture taken by a person on another world... when you think about it, how amazing is that? And why aren't we trying to send more people to take more photos! *sighs for gorgeous science-fiction futures* Instead we've developed Facebook and Twitter, and turned our gazes navel-wards...

I'm reading Phil Rickman's Wine of Angels right now (and hate putting it down), but I must look out some good science fiction again when I've finished... Does anyone have any s-f recs? *g*

Good morning! I was ever so lazy today, and woke up whilst the skies were just lightening - sunrise proper wasn't until 7.55am.

If the government and all those pressure groups that sulked at the defeat of the daylight savings bill last week had their way - it would still be dark now for another hour.

I cannot tell you how much I hate that idea... I don't ever sleep in until nearly 9 o'clock at the weekend any more, no matter how late I go to bed, and I bet that millions of non-teenager/non-twenty-somethings around the country are the same. Will they really force us all to wake up in the dark at the weekend as well as during the week in the winter? It would be so much more depressing... Surely the morning is when we all need the light, to get us up and going and in a cheerful mood - never mind to drive to work more safely during the week, if we're a bit sleepy to start with? If anything they should put the clocks back a bit further in winter! It really scares me that the media seems to be supporting this so hard - and I can't imagine where the lobby groups have got their information this time. How will the roads be safer if even the extended rush hour is being made in the dark? I seriously don't understand...

And I'm in a good mood for having woken up to daylight today! *g*

Also - hurrah, cos I've been writing Pros again, which I've not felt like for ages. My theory is that using your brain is like exercise - it begets more using your brain/exercise... *g* So now that I'm feeling all useful and purposeful with my seasonal-second-job, I get to write Pros too! Hurrah! Of course it all ends at around 3pm today, when I have to go home and do seasonal-second-job for the whole weekend, but... in the meantime - There's over 14,000 words of hurrah! (Okay, some I'd written before, but they've been languishing, and now they're not.) Also, have huge-enormous idea for an older-lads novel-y thing which I really want to write, so that's on the cards now too... Oh, and WWII story... WWII story is still there, turning gently over and over in the background... Maybe with newly found want-to-write-now-ness I'll write all three! Hmmn... by the end of the year, what d'you reckon to that as a goal...? And it's kind of nice, cos even if no one else wants to read them, I still want to write them... *vbg*

Right - the lads, to celebrate!

Started out a weird day, though.. )

Apparently they've found the longevity gene... )

Finally they're admitting women may have used weapons in the past... )

Sea Angels and Sea Devils! )

And now there are just nine minutes before hometime, yeay!
