Today was another Very Happy Day. It started off for the second time in a row nice and early - because I was off to meet [livejournal.com profile] helenraven for an unexpected and bonus breakfast! And the sun was actually shining, and if it was a little chillier - well, the sun was actually shining! My path to the cafe took me alongside waterways and past ducks and swans and moorhens - just a few minutes from where I was staying in the opposite direction to the one I'd taken that first night!

And then interesting chat over coffee and pancakes (Happy Shrove Tuesday!) I have got to go and visit the Icelandic Phallological Museum... *vbg*

One more happy for the day though - I had an email with official go-ahead for the foodsharing - yeay!

Happy holiday days are always happy, but on this occasion I also got to meet [livejournal.com profile] ariss_tenoh and have a lovely wander with her around Greenwich... *g* And if anyone spots the Pros connection in the photos below, I will totally write them a Pros fic all of their own, to their specifications. Go! *g*

I must admit the day was looking like it might be a bit grim when I hit London Eye Pier, but I managed to miss rush hour on the tube, somehow, and had time for breakfast at Le Pain Quotidien at the Southbank Centre, which I have to say was very good. Even the coffee was really nice!

Lots of happy traveller things today! First I went swish-swishing past English landscapes (some of them rather flooded...) on the train...

Then I caught the tube (squish-squish with one line on strike and others not fully working...) to my accommodation, which is new for me - by the Thames, in Rotherhithe!

Today's wanderings saw me spending an awful lot more on buying a pair of comfy shoe/boots than I mean to (although it was then bliss to be able to walk around again, instead of hobbling!) And I do need them really, since my favourite Croc boots are properly leaking now... *sighs sadly* In the end I didn't do any more locationing after all - I didn't even get to the Embankment, cos although I'd planned to, I accidentally started walking the wrong way... *headdesk* But it meant I got to see some cool bits of London that I venture towards less often - thanks too, to my new shoe/boots... *g*

And then the nighttime park to match this morning's park!

I wonder if the lads would ever have looked at London like this - well, lots of it wasn't there, of course - no Shard or Walkie-Talkie building (though the Mithraeum actually was there as a display, though it was above ground (they reconstructed it away from its original site so they could build something, and it's recently been moved back and incorporated into the building by the new owner). I know it's partly the film stock, but London always looked so grey and brown and sort of grim in Pros - it seems to have perked up alot these days. Maybe it's just clearing away the last of the WWII bomb damage, and a penchant for more sparkly lights everywhere, but... I dunno. Does it seem to be differently coloured, you-people-who-live-in-London, or is that just an artefact of our old (beloved) tv series?!

The sky is grey, the pavements are wet, but I walked past this park on my way to coffee this morning, and now I'm sitting watching lots of twinkling lights around the concrete grey shops, which I can absolutely forgive in November in big cities that could do with some non-grey happy. *g* Plus, pretty.

Yesterday afternoon looked pretty good too, involving, as it did, meeting [livejournal.com profile] heliophile_oxon for a drink and putting-the-world-to-rights at a Pros location - The Great Northern Railway Tavern, from Stopover. We sat in this corner, actually... I think the lads sat at the next bench along, but it was taken when I got there. Plus a bit rearranged anyway after... oh my, forty years and just over six months. *g*

Although to be honest I was relying on old memories from being there years ago, and I wasn't at all prepared. I took a couple of pics, but none the right way (again, people... *g*)

Still the same glass in those windows though! *g*

I was in bed so early for me last night - before 10.30pm (!!), so up at a decent time today, which was good. Slightly ironic, since I'm on holiday for a couple of days, but good for getting up early for the meeting on Sunday. Today... is about first of all finding some comfortable shoes, after a realise-my-boots-leak catastrophe minutes before I had to leave to catch my train yesterday, and swapping them for more waterproof boots that are on the other hand, not great for walking lots, which I definitely want to do today! Not actually sure what I'm going to do after that though - too much to choose from! Christmas market on Southbank at some point, I think, and perhaps back via Leicester Square for similar reasons (well, it might be November, but since I'm here...) Or - through the parks and nip into the Scarsdale, just for the sake of it? Um... I'll see where I end up and what the weather's like, I guess. And being me, what I'd really like to do is some writing... *g*

... heading to London, home of the lads!
Its looking quite autumny in the countryside now - all faded russet and dimmed golds. It was about this time last year that I headed back from Australia and was in London again - same as this time, for a working weekend in Cambridge, ready for Job 2. I remember London looking very pretty, so we'll see! I think there was less rain than is forecast now, mind...

But still - there will be at least a little Pros locationing, because I'm meeting a Pros-y friend at one, and then... We'll see! I've got two days off, so maybe I can find cool things, rain or not... *g*

How're you doing? *g*

Which plonker forgot to turn on for George Gently tonight...?

*headdeskheaddeskheaddesk*

I can't get iPlayer to work on my tv either, though thank god it works on my laptop (I just watched the last Poldark - ever so good. And now I can read the novel that I might have bought the other day...) So - George Gently still to come, but for now...

It was a lovely weekend in London! I've already said that Saturday was a gorgeous afternoon of chat with [livejournal.com profile] veronicaluv, who it was lovely to meet at long last.

And then Sunday! Sunday was full of many lovely things too! The least lovely thing was that my bed was too hard, but I must have slept a bit, because I woke up. *g* I was bit worried that I was up and about too early for a Sunday, but I managed to find coffee, and then tried to work out what to do next. I had to be at Paddington at 1pm, and various places didn't open until 11, which was a bit of a pain, but then I found just the spot, and set off on my way. *g* I went past...

Well I was sort of in an office, and worked hard actually - all that thinking about Rasch graphs, and Wright Maps and... quite brain-exploding stuff it was... and now of course there's the coursework about it - eeep! We finished early though, and I didn't get a headache today, and then I ended up deciding not to trog around London when I had no particular plans and did have luggage, so I walked over the river (well, on the bridge, not actually... *g*) and caught the train and was home in time for archery, but then I was quite tired and didn't go after all. I would have had to rush, and miss dinner, and... so no.

But London was lovely and London. Here's the view out my hotel window, and a London-y contre-jour (thanks [livejournal.com profile] gvenanne!) photo...

And then... )
byslantedlight: (BD Asleep (adapted from orig icon by Sun)
I've been on such a run of posting lately that it seems a shame to break it...

...okay, that was surreal! I suddenly realised, sitting here typing at nearly 10.30pm at night in the heart of Bloomsbury, London, that I could hear brass band music - and that it really did seem to be coming from outside. So over to the window I went, threw it open - and sure enough, there was a brass band marching across the top of the street... and it was followed by a horse-drawn carriage of some sort, but rather than carrying people, it seemed to be glass-encased, and almost looked as if it was bearing a coffin. But I couldn't see mourners, and the music was cheerful - When the Saints Go Marching Home, but... *is puzzled* Just... surreal, that was!

Sorry - where was I?! Oh yes, still in London, but so sleepy after a long day that I'm posting largely to try and stay awake for just another half an hour... It's been a nice enough day - the course was fine (though blargh, stats), and we finished a bit early so I wandered off to stretch my legs for a bit...
84 ThamesLondon
...and found the river, and wandered back and met a friend for lovely chatting, and then wandered back upwards and found a Waterstones which did indeed sell Paperblanks, so I have my new journal at last, and then wandered back down again, realised I'd not actually eaten since lunchtime and it was about 8pm, found a Pret and grabbed a sandwich, came home here and collaaaaaaapsed. So tired, which is bizarre, cos I've not really done much, actually! But I could have slept hours ago... Hmmn, actually I felt rather like that last night too, and now that I think about it - I had been to CST the day before. Forgot about that! That tends to be sleepy-making...

So it turns out I'm going to waste my hotel room by sleeping in it when I could have been writing tonight... *sighs* Well, maybe on the train tomorrow night...

Oh it's no good - sleeeeeeeeep!

Still on my camera phone, cos I couldn't get two of the screws undone to fix it when I tried the other day - gargh. Oh well - hurrah for camera phones!

Hmmn - in case I finish work and don't fall asleep straight after, does anyone fancy giving me an odd random-word type prompt for if I get really write-y (for something brief and different (in a Pros-y way) before I carry on with other things)?

London, baby...

Yeay, I made it, and I even got some work done on the train! Mind you, that was a palaver and a half! I trundled down to the local station (fifteen minutes down the road) only to find that all the carparking was parked in. Noooo! And it's just in the country rather than in the nearest town (that it's named after), so there aren't any streets to park on. Disaster!

The palaver bit )But the station was pretty, and the journey was okay (as long as I haven't caught a cold from the two people nearest me, who were both spluttering and suffering...), the tube was good, and when I got to the hotel I was turned away. *g* Well, sort of. Upgraded she called it, to the hotel across the street. Where my room does actually have enough room to perform a ballet, a big couch (that's really too far from the tv to see it, but the thought's almost there), and when I opened the second wardrobe it turned out to be a mini-kitchen, so hee! I neverget upgraded, either, so bonus yeay!

It also turns out to have free internet, so I'm taking a few minutes to catch breath, and then I'm off out for a wander before it gets too dark, and something to eat, and maybe to find Foyle's, cos it's open late, and... well, it's a bookshop. *g*

And then back to finish work (which is nearly there, and can be done when it's dark and I'm not out any more), and... well, and to thank everyone who recognised a japonica for me. *g* Maybe hotel rooms will be good for writing, too.... *g*

I managed to completely forget that if I wanted to post pics I had to take them on my phone, so I only have one to post today. And its been quite the day...

Found my way to trendy coffee place that owed me a free coffee for breakfast, and had coffee and porridge (which they do with prunes and honey and cinnamon - nicer than I was expecting!), and then found my hospital appointment, and all is good (apparently my Hashimoto's thyroiditis comes with the sensation of someone's hands around your throat as standard, but it should eventually fade as the thyroid atrophies and shrinks - erm, hurrah?) So I set off happily via the bank so that I could pay for my parking, all pleased cos I'd get to London early. And the roads were clear, and all was good. Except that I got there and for the first time ever there was nowhere to park! And then I saw I had a missed call, so I thought maybe someone'll move whilst I'm checking - only it turned out to be the bank all apologetic cos they'd forgotten to give me my card back, and could I come and get it...? But... I said... but I've just got to London... Only she couldn't quite grasp the concept of posting it to a branch bank for me to pick up, so I headsteeringwheeled a few times and set off back to Cambridge... Got my card, got back in the car, and drove back to London again. Gaaaargh! So three hours after I first got there I arrived again and on the bright side at least there was parking by now... But did I mention gaaaaargh? I knew everything'd gone too smoothly...

This time though I managed to get myself onto the tube too, and headed for Tower Hill to meet a Pros-y person for wanderings and chat. And there was both, and there were poppies at the Tower of London looking just as amazing and sad and spectacular as all the pictures had suggested they would, and all was finally good again!

And now there is Holland Park YHA and being too tired to do anything but sit here and type! There's actually a couiple of big high school groups (of the noisy age group...) here too which is a bit of a bugger, and I'm in the "new" bit rather than the nice old bit, but hey-ho. Therse will shortly be sleep, and when I wake up I will be in Kensington, where my older-lads live(d). It was funny walking down Kensington High St from the tube - it actually felt like the place where they lived, as if I'd see them walking down the street any minute! I must write some more about them in those years... *g*

And now I shall brave bed, I think, and perhaps have a wee thinks about our lads in their flat together... *g*

Wretched cold...

Saturday, 6 September 2014 11:25 pm
byslantedlight: (BD Asleep (adapted from orig icon by Sun)
...all I want to do is go to bed to sleep, and that was all I wanted last night too - what a waste of being in London (which I'm not any more...)

My cold just got worse and worse, and though I dragged myself out for a walk to the river after the course...
2014-09-05 01ThamesWalk...and paused at Amico Bio for a veggie dinner on the way back, I was soooo tired, and I just took myself back to my hotel room and collapsed.

Today was almost as bad - though I was a bit more awake for longer, which was good, becuse I decided I couldn't possibly force an entire YHA dorm room listen to me cough and sniff all night, and so I drove home instead of having an extra free day in town.
2014-09-06 01DrivingHomefromLondon
Drove through pastures new too - the North Circular (Hangar Lane!) out to the M3, which was going west not north. The sun was spectacular - after being grey and flat all day, it peered out for some evening drama. I reckon... a dragon! *g* Then it was all gorgeously mellow and misty all the way back to Somerset...

Got back to WH safely, even stopping at the big supermarket in nearby town to pick up some more tissues, only... I knew there was a music festival here this weekend, and that was one reason I was planning to stop in London. I figured I'd eardrop and cottonwool my ears and let the tinnitus take over. Not ideal, but hey-ho... What I hadn't thought about was that everyone would have nicked the parking! Gargh! So I've had to park in the carpark that threatens numberplate recognition and dire consequences on all who park there overnight. Cross fingers for me - they'd have to be pretty tight to punish me because the organisers haven't arranged parking so as not to disrupt residents, right...?

Turned out S was home too, and watching telly loudly in her room, but she didn't do more than call out hi when I did, and I don't want to breathe my Horrid Germs all over her, so I put my earphones in to watch Doctor Who on iPlayer, and hid with a medicinal glass of Drambuie (which I can actually taste!) I feel bad that I'm going to be coughing all night, but...

Also - Doctor Who!

Stoopib code... It just appeared today... a Somerset cold? Or maybe a hospital cold, from my appointment the other day. Or maybe... just a cold. Stoopid code. If only it had waited until I'd finished the two day professional course I'm here in London for! 'snot very impressive to sit sniffing, is it... (geddit? 'snot very... *g*)

On the bright side, everything else went smooth as very smooth clockwork again (I'm getting worried... maybe the cold balances it out, though?). Drove the van back to Cambs. (very fun, I like driving big high vehicles. Maybe I should be a trucker... *g*). Dropped it off okay. Popped into Duxford, and found some books to inspire my WWII fic again (and stretched my legs - I'm starting to feel the road-equivalent of having land-lubber legs!). Drove into my normal parking place in the far reaches of London - didn't find one, so had to park in the tube station carpark and pay for it, but that's okay, cos it's work. Tube to Euston. Made the mistake of coming out the entrance where all the smokers in England go to smoke (bleuchhhh). Wandered down to my hotel. Was given my room. Wandered down to Foyles (new and shiny) and had a sandwich and a browse. Wandered back and was tempted by Baskin Robbins (ice cream is nice for sore throats...) Bought cold remedy and cold remedy and tissues and tissues and throat sweets for the course tomorrow. Took some night-time London pics. Home to hotel!

And now I have to go and finally read the reports I need to read for tomorrow, and try to remember what statistics are. I much prefer the B/D kind of standard deviation... *g*

Mixed Weekend...

Stuffety-stuff... last week turned out to be more hectic than I was expecting - hadn't finished marking etc after all until about 9pm Friday night - though hooray, now I'm finished - mopping up and all! *g* - and when I woke up on Saturday morning it was with a yucky headache that refused to go away all weekend until nearly the end... It turned out to be all ups and downs this weekend too - didn't get to go on my Stearman flight for the third time, this time cos there'd been oil splurting up over the windscreen - can't be good! - but that was okay cos I thought I'd have a nice, historic-ish wander-ish National Trustish day to celebrate putting new tyres on Little Car. So I wandered, headache and all, up north-ish of me, through Fenland and off to Peckover Hall. Which I then couldn't find. Which was ridiculous, cos Wisbech isn't that big a town - though it didn't help that there were roadworks in the city centre. So I went off and found this place instead...
