The call came late in the day, as the sun set into grey sludge on the horizon, rain on the way.
"Raymond Duncan shouldn't have come here. Raymond Doyle is a copper.
Want him back alive?"
They'd keep him alive, Bodie knew, for a while anyway. It was good to have something to bargain with, safer to have proof that the trade-off would be worthwhile.
There were a thousand ways for a man to be kept alive, and wish he wasn't.
They waited by the phone for instructions, for the next move, for a clue.
He waited.
Waited for comfort.
