So there I am, tottering around in the morning as you do when you're still at the shower-and-open-your-eyes stage, and I get dressed, and I get my stuff together, and I open the curtains, and...

Snow! Snooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow! *g*

2012-12-05 SnowAtWorksmall
It was just about light enough when I got to work to take a better photo with my phone (which needs recharging just when I want it, only no time to run back in and get recharger since I'd already faffed with photos and it was going to be a slow drive in...) It was just lying all beautifully over the fields and houses and roads as I drove though...

Snow!

I had no idea that was forecast down here, but it really cheered me up! An email from my boss took care of that of course, when I got here to work, but hey-ho... I'm taking deep breaths and thinking about the snow. *sighs happily* Oh, I wish I wasn't at work today!

They've temporarily closed Luton airport because of the snow! Hah - poor daughter thought she'd moved dahn sarf to get away from snow *g* It's pretty, though - hope you had a safe journey in to work.

I had no idea there was even a thought of snow except in the hills and highlands, just now - such a very happy surprise when I opened my curtains! *g* The drive was fine - not too many idiots trying to do 70 and overtake, and the only place my wee car slipped a bit was when I was in the outside bit of our work multistorey carpark, and needed to reverse into where it was still lying and then drive forwards again! I can't actually see it out my work window, sadly - stupid architects built the windows just slightly too high to actually be able to look down from - despite being on the 4th floor!

No snow for us here - I'll do without for a bit, thanks! *g*

Snow is lovely if you don't have to be anywhere. Just bailed on my morning appointment, because the road is like an icerink.
Thank the lord for skype! And drive safely.

Ah, I love snow even when I do have to go somewhere - but then I've had practice driving on it for years in Alaska, so I just go slowly and carefully and roll my eyes at the still-speedy drivers and their potential ditch-work... *g* That said, my way in to work is pretty much on main-ish roads, and there wasn't much slip left to be had, unless you veered off to the side - sounds like you might be somewhere a bit more dramatic (or more snowy *g*).

Also - hello, nice to meet you! *g* Oh, and I've just been back to your lj to remind myself what you post about (I wondered if you'd friended me by mistake when I saw the Bleach, cos despite [livejournal.com profile] empty_mirrors, I'm still not entirely sure what that is - I must take my laziness off and go google...) and I see where you are! I'm now also jealous of you in your Skype-y village... Despite sitting beside two massive windows here at work, the architects designed them to be too high to look down from. I love to see the sky, but I'd quite like to see the snow too... I feel as if I should perhaps know you from somewhere else, though...? Do I? Or was it just a random happy-friending? *g*

Oh, definitely not random...
I remember a very snowy winter in Moscow when I kept sane by writing about Cowley being horrible to the boys - in three languages, by hand and on paper!
That was the last time I tried my hand at fanfics until I got bitten by the Bleach bug last year. Good thing coming out of that was me realising that there are actually people out there who write about the boys - and I've been avidly reading since. :-)

Oh excellent - shall I cross my fingers that some of your B/D fanfic might find its way out of the Moscow Archives...? *g*

Every time I see someone posting about Russian, I kick myself for not getting on and carrying on with learning it... I started years ago, but didn't get beyond the basic first term's lessons - though I'm surprised how well I remember what I did learn, considering... Maybe what I need is a snowy winter in Moscow... *g*

We've only had severe frosts - but I can't say I look forward to snow. It's pretty, but only for a few hours then it gets all dirty and slushy and... You saw yours at the best time, on the way to work before it all got spoilt!

Lol - I've got to admit that snow is prettier down here than it ever was up your way, even when it's lying on the buildings and streets... Of course there are alot more twee thatched villages around too, which doesn't hurt... *g* Snow's definitely more of a countryside thing, unless you get alot of it, to cover up the dirty patches regularly... *g*

Not sure I'm brave enough to resurrect that fic. It was a spin-off from my favourite episode, Soul Test, where Bodie suddenly develops a death wish. And being an awful lot younger, I saddled the man with a female love interest.
As for the Russian, I didn't have a choice. I did lots of languages at school, but Russian never clicked with me. Though spening a winter in the place was a great experience.

Ah - I may have to take back my expression of interest if it was Pros het... *g* But you know, when you're finished with that Bleach fandom... *g*

I'm curious about Soul Test though, I think you must be having a crossover moment! Wild Justice, where Kate Ross diagnoses Bodie with having a deathwish?

Lucky you! We got some last week but it only lasted a few hours. I'm hoping more is on the way. I don't want a repeat of last year's "not" White Christmas.

I know! And such a surprise to me! *g*

When I was going back to the Isle of Man for Christmases, there was quite often a "white Boxing Day" for some reason, if not an actual White Christmas, and I do rather miss that... 2010 was my favourite weather-year... *sighs for snow*

Wow! Do you have all the transcripts? The one I'm thinking of had quite a few of Bodie's old army buddies die for a variety of reasons. One in particular falls foul of a biker gang and his girlfriend comes to Bodie for help (?) Not 100% sure how he ended up with the girl.
He challenges some bikers to a fight, races a cross-bike up a sand pit and almost takes a bullet from Cowley at the end.
The ending went something like "Would you really have pulled the trigger?" - "What do you think?"

And yes, I was writing het at the time. Still am, occasionally, but fanfic is great for trying new things out.

Lol - not me personally, but they're all up at the Hatstand website, courtesy of Pros fans over the years! And it definitely sounds like Wild Justice is the one you're thinking of - I like that one too.

There's all sorts of Pros-y resources out there, and fic archives and zine listings and image libraries, and... and... and... *g*

Oh my, *controls nosebleed*... I was supposed to be working, not brushing up on B&D quotes!
What a fun site, though. I think there's some pros fanfic in my future somewhere.

And, BTW, it was Wild Justice, but my sister pointed out that German TV screened tiltled The Soul Test.
So now, it all makes sense!

And thanks so much for pointing me at fun stuff that makes me not do work...

Curious minds... what is it about snow that makes it such a delight? Is it that it makes everything look so pretty - does that outweigh the cold and the inconvenience? Serious question from someone living in semitropics with very little experience of the white stuff.

Sorry - major delay in replying... What outweighs the cold (which actually I prefer to heat any time) and the inconvenience (which is no more than if it was rainy, or very windy or very dry) for me is the way it quietens down the world, I think - there's a quietness to snow (I think it physically does muffle sound and echo and so on), which translates as peace in the world instead of the constant noise of engines and electricity and people doing things. And I suppose people tend to stay at home more too, which also muffles those things! At the same time, people all react to snow - sort of focus on it all at once somehow, so that there's more of a sense of community (a bit like there was when there were only a few tv channels, and almost everyone would have watched a particular show the night before, so that everyone had something in common the next day), no matter whether it's people grumping about it, or enjoying it. And then there's the fact that it's fun - kids love it, and it's relatively rare here, so people make an effort to get out in it to play, or to feel a bit of the magic of it themselves...

It was different though, when I lived in Alaska - I still loved the snow, but it was also more everyday... I think there it was more the prettiness factor (even if you lived in town the spruce-coated trees weren't far away), and the fact that it was part of what made winter up there different from everywhere else. Snow meant the aurora borealis would be about, and the temperatures would plummet and let everyone show the rest of the world how cool they were for being able to live and be happy at -20C... *g* And you had psychological permission to hunker down in your cabin and be cosy all winter if you wanted to, and to look forward to the crazy energy of summertime, and there were cabin parties, and Christmas and all the different ways of dealing with deep winter that Alaska has...

Thank you for such a thoughtful answer. there's a quietness to snow,.... which translates as peace in the world
I can see the appeal in that.
