Day Twelve - unexpected happy things!

But first an expected one. This is where I spent most of my morning... *g*

I was doing my taster/interview - in the Yellow Drawing Room. I did wonder a little bit if it would be boring (standing around, watching people) but actually it wasn't at all. Of course I was with someone who was telling me all about things, and now and then chatting, but even when it is very quiet you're apparently allowed to read, so yeay. I also discovered what the big cushions in the middle of the floor are for - in all the times I've gone through this room I've never been told. See them? You go and lie down on them, and take a photo looking up to the gasolier in the dome (the dome which was designed by John Soane, who designed the Bank of England). It's not a great photo, if it's just taken on your camera phone, but... *g*
And then unexpected joy!

Just when I was despairing that my copy of Fair's Point would be processed until after I'd left on holiday - this email! It's coming! It might get here on time after all!
And finally, even more unexpected joy. There I was, chatting with
moth2fic about the Charm of Magpies books I've been going on about the last... okay, day. Feels like longer. *g* She mentioned that the next one was up for free if you pre-ordered it on Amazon, for one day only, so I went to look - knowing full-well I don't have a kindle, but hey-ho. Sure enough it was, out in January 2015 still, but there for pre-order for free. What a nice treat - if you've got a kindle. So I idly popped over to the Kobo store, just in case, and - not only was it there as a free download, it was actually there! To download today! And have on my Kobo! And read! Hurrah! *hugs Charm of Magpies stories*

I couldn't decide whether it'd been released by mistake or what, but I've worked out the catch - I knew there'd be one - it's got a time-limit on it. I idly flicked on my Kobo whilst I was taking a break from the computer screen (I know, I know...) and a wee message popped up on it - "20 minutes left"! Aaaack! And being on an e-reader (whingewhinge) I couldn't tell how long it was, so I had to throw myself down on my bed and read like billy-o, but I did and it was fab, and I finished it. That said, it hasn't disappeared yet, so it's either waiting for me to connect to Kobo, or... well, I don't know what else, actually. It's definitely more than 20 minutes later now! I Do Not Like that e-readers are allowed to snatch books out of your fingers whenever they want... (if I'd borrowed it from the library for a day it wouldn't feel as bad... Or, you know, if they'd said there was a timelimit on it when I downloaded!) But on the other hand - I read it, and it was fab... *g*
And there's only one more Job 1 job (even if it is massively long and I should have done alot of it already and haven't) before I'm off on holiday - yeay! There's gonna be travelling, and photos, and reading, and writing, and reading and reading and... *g*

Date: Thursday, 15 May 2014 09:27 am (UTC)I'm looking forward to your reviews (as always *g*) of the Jack Haldean book - how fab to find it for 84p!
I think I'm going to take a book bag with me on holiday - an advantage of a touring holiday, a whole car boot for books! *g*

Date: Thursday, 15 May 2014 07:49 am (UTC)And books are always good things, even if they might get snatched back, and holidays are wonderful, and jobs pay for both so they have to be counted as good things too :)

Date: Thursday, 15 May 2014 09:24 am (UTC)And yeah, jobs have to be counted as good things too (I certainly don't want to be without one, unless there's some other major source of income!) - and how lucky are we, that we can use them to pay for books and holidays rather than just shoes and food...

Date: Thursday, 15 May 2014 08:40 am (UTC)I do hope your Fairs Point arrives in time to take on holiday - I've ordered mine and as I'm here for another three weeks or so minimum I should have it to take to Portugal.

Date: Thursday, 15 May 2014 11:21 am (UTC)Yeah, I've seen the Kindle app, but I don't really want to go there. I don't like the way they seem to treat authors etc, via the various rules, and I don't like that they've used a system that locks it all down to having to use their software. It almost defeats the advantages of making more books available! And I've had some bad experiences quality-wise when trying the free stuff!
My Kobo uses the standard epub format, and you can even borrow e-books from public libraries on it. The idea is basically that if you've bought it, you own it and get to keep it - things shouldn't be snatched away (which is why I was rather surprised about A Case of Spirits seeming to have a time limit on it, without being warned about that at the storefront. On the other hand - it seemed to be available in Kobo when it wasn't in Kindle, and if it was a preview offer/mistake then I can understand the time-limit - though I'm still cross that there's no warning! Though actually I've just looked and it just says "Available as a free e-book" today... I don't know, it's all rather confusing, cos Amazon claims it's not available until January next year!)
Hurrah for living vicariously - sometimes it's what we need to do! (Though I don't suppose you'd like to do my work for me today, would you...? *g*)
