...because it's been a few days, and I am progressing, honest...
2014-12-04 01EncyclopaediaOut

Today was odd - up late cos it was after 2am when I turned off my light again, and then dashing off for my first fiddle lesson in two weeks, having not had time to practice in between either... Then I popped into Wells to find things like kitchen bins and cutlery - none. So down to the Sainsbury's in Street, cos that has house-y things - but no, none. Back to Shepton to the hardware shop there, and they were out of bins! Bizarre lack-of-shopping day! Well, except that I did buy a mug tree, a chopping board, and there were various supermarket offers on things I normally buy, so I stocked up... By that time the day was pretty much gone, and I had to start work - *headdesk*

But I did manage to put together some more shelves when I'd finished, and got out our ancient encyclopaedia that have been in my storage ever since mum went back to Australia. Mum and dad bought them when my sister and I were wee, and my brother not even thought of - 1974, I think it must have been, because the first yearbook is 1975! I remember them arriving and absolutely loving them - except that I scared myself silly by opening "W" and reading about werewolves. I was totally the age to know that it said they weren't real, but that it also talked about ancient legends in many countries, and what if...?

Mind you, I'm not over scaring myself silly either - my desk faces my front door, which has a sort of frosted-glass effect window, and when I looked up just a while ago I swear a dark shape moved across it... Now, common sense tells me that I didn't - it was either my very own hair, or else perhaps the wee security light by the door went on and off when an animal ran by - but late-at-night-on-my-own-for-the-first-time-in-many-years keeps nudging me differently!

I think there's extra noises too cos it's cold-cold-cold! It was proper winter cold today, so that I actually got my woolly gloves out! There's still yellow leaves around here, but they're vanishing now too... And there. It's 1.25am and I swore I'd be lights-out by 1am tonight. My hot water bottle awaits! Goodnight!

You'd think it'd be easy enough to find a *bin* wouldn't you? Except that I've noticed myself that normal household stuff is not as easy to locate as you might think these days. I remember it taking us over a week to locate a new loo brush for instance.

Like you I'm rather attuned to odd noises and that kind of stuff. It's easy to dismiss during the day, not so easy in the early hours and you're on your own.

I will email you soon, promise. Hectic at the moment. Was going to catch up on my email today but the grandson is ill and we have him for the day so... I also rather suspect that you're far too busy for social visits at the moment?

Loving, loving, loving Philip and Nico. No words. Yum.

Honestly, I couldn't believe it was so difficult to find a bin! To be fair there was a grey plastic one in Tesco that could have done, but I didn't want grey, and it seemed as if there should surely be more choice than that! One thing I have come across mind, are lots of loo brushes - maybe that was the problem, they're all up around here, and the bins are... somewhere else. Maybe you've got a surfeit of... dish drainers? *g*

Hope your grandson's not too miserable-ill - how old is he now? He must be getting on a bit these days! Oddly enough I seem to have lots of social engagements booked for next week now - my first book club, which is also their Christmas do and meal (I need to read the book too!), and Christmas drinks with the couple who live at the very road-end of the farm building, and then photography club next Saturday morning - very unlike my life! Then there's some days in between, and I'm back to Cambridge for a hospital appointment the Thursday after! Blimey... I'm hoping to get shelves up this weekend, mind, and books properly away. Maybe we'll both end up a bit less hectic somewhere in between everything, though - if you have a good day, give me a shout and we can see if we collide... *g*

So glad you're loving Phillip and Nico - you know how much I adore them... *vbg*

Oh, wow, I remember the yearbooks we would get every year from the encyclopedia company. Two of them, in fact. One regular, one just science. I don't remember when we finally stopped buying them, but it was far too late to not be stuck with a set of books we didn't use. I think my sister still has the encyclopedia, but I managed to talk her in to getting rid of the yearbooks.

It sounds like things are coming along, slowly but surely. It's hard to imagine a hardware store not having bins, but there you go.

And you might think about a curtain for your door. Keep the monsters at bay. *g*

Your icon completely threw me! I've not seen anyone else using that icon ever, I don't think, so when I scrolled down quickly to see where I was, I got all confused thinking I didn't think I'd replied to comments yet! Eventually I actually paused to actually read the comment, and saw that it wasn't me after all... *g*

And nooooo for getting rid of the yearbooks! I'm actually dead chuffed that I have all the Pros-era ones - and yes! the Yearbooks and Science and the Future! I have every intention of using them... *g*

I'm going to have a final push this weekend, and get more shelves made up and boxes emptied - I am, I am! And who knows, I might even come across a bin somewhere... that was very bizarre, the one thing I thought I'd find easily enough!

Good idea about the curtain - I did actually have one left in a packet, and now it's up, so there are only the odd thumps and squeaks to ignore! *g*

It would have been much easier if they'd had everything I wanted in one place, but hey-ho! I'm going to have a final push to finish the rest of the flat-packs this weekend, and put away boxes, and be more like home! *g*

I'm amazed! That encyclopedia is taking up a whole tall shelf!
Mr. Siskiou loved his parents' encyclopedia, and read his way through all of them as a grade schooler.
Have to ask him, if his had anything about werewolves!
I can just see imagination taking over, at night and in a new place!

And no bins?! How strange!

Your desk/shelf corner looks really nice.

How is the heat in your new space? Hopefully it's only cold outside.
We have the woodstove installed, but have to wait for the inspection next week, before we can use it.
Maybe we can light it for the first time on M's birthday next Thursday. :)

I love the encyclopaedia... *g* The top shelf is the red Children's Britannica, then there's the Micropaedia Ready Reference and Index, and when you need really in-depth information you go to the Macropaedia. *g* Then every year we had the Yearbook and Science and the Future - I'm really looking forward to reading some of them, actually, cos you forget what it wasn't like, sometimes! Also, they're all the Pros-era years! *g*

Heat-wise it's not too bad - I've got my own gas central heating, though I've no idea how much I'm spending to have it on when I'm home in the daytime too. It gets a bit chilly around my desk still, but that's sitting still, for you.. It's supposed to warm up here again tonight/tomorrow though. There was ice on my car when I popped just outside around midnight, but by 8am tomorrow it's supposed to be 9C again! In Scotland they're gonna have snow, though... *sighs for wanting snow*

I've not managed to get to your woodstove post yet! I put it aside to read properly, and didn't get back. Tomorrow! Oh, bliss, the weekend... *vbg* And how fab for M, to have a woodstove fire for his birthday - better than a candle... *vbg*

I'm beginning to wonder if you'll be able to fit in once you have all your belongings set up. :-)

It's starting to look so organised, you've done wonders in a short space of time. Putting those bookshelves together by yourself isn't the easiest of jobs, either, so go you.

I find it really odd that you couldn't find a bin other than the grey one. Does everyone own a goat or something in Somerset so that a bin isn't necessary?

It's getting there it really is! At this stage I have one more flatpack to make up, and then I'm done with that - unless I buy some more... *g*

And heee for goats - landlord J has just bought five sheep, as it happens... (and they looked so peaceful, munching in their back garden, that I wanted some....) *g* I don't know! Maybe there'd been a big rush on new bins for Christmas, or maybe everyone just bought the grey ones (that's what my Cambs. landlady had, actually...) or maybe people just spend way more on their bins than I'm prepared to! To be fair there were those big expensive silver round ones, but I don't think I want one of those, at least not right now, especially since it's only me...

From what I remember of those big expensive silver round ones - if they're the same ones I'm thinking of, made of galvanised metal - they're bloody heavy, and once you fill them... there's a reason why putting the bin out used to be the male's job!

Lol - it used to be my job to put the bin out for a while, and it was one of those ones! I don't think those are the ones I've been seeing in shops though, these are taller and narrower and chrome-y, and have a plastic insert with a handle that always seems to get caught on the plastic somewhere...
