The I-should-still-be-working meme...

Via
loyseofverlaine and
solosundance. It's been ages since I did a meme, and I should still be working this one was a bit different, so...
1. How many jobs have you had, and which was your favorite?
I'm not even sure I could count at this point... My favourite was probably my MA/PhD research, which I'm totally counting as a job because I was effectively paid for most of it. But to be honest I really enjoyed waitressing too... *vbg* Actually I did really enjoy teaching history as well. Really my favourite job tends to be whatever I'm doing at the time, unless I'm not really very keen on it and wanting to move on to the next thing... *g*
2. When did you first connect to other people via computers?
1995, in an internet cafe in California. I can't remember why now, but I needed to email someone so I had to get an email address - but how did I have to email them rather than get in touch any other way, if I didn't already have an email address...?
3. Were/are you on AOL? Compuserve? LJ? Dreamwidth? A Listserv? Other?
One house I lived in had AOL. Mostly I was on whatever was provided (though not Compuserve or things like that, which I didn't know about) where I lived. I remember way back using Netscape, and then IE was standard, and Yahoo was a silly name - and eventually came Google. On lj, obviously... *g* I've recently got a Facebook, reluctantly, cos it was the only way to take part in the local photography club properly. And I've got a book blog separately for various reasons. Oh, and a Pinterest, cos that way I could save their pretty pictures. Technically I've got a Tumblr, but it never made sense to me, so I don't bother with it. Hmmn, am I really only missing Twitter from the cacophony? I don't use any of them as properly as I use lj, though - there's just not enough time!
4. If you went to college, does your major match your career/current job?
The only college I went to was my first high school, which was called H- College! My PGCE matches one of my current jobs, but my other degrees don't really right now... :(
5. Have you had a mammogram? Colonoscopy?
Might have had the first. You'd think I'd remember, wouldn't you...
6. When did you get your first cell phone? What was it like? (Did it have a screen?
2002, when I got back from Alaska the first time, and with great reluctance. I had to get one, cos I was temping at the time and the temp agencies suddenly expected you to have one - if you didn't answer them straight away, they didn't bother with you... It did have a wee screen actually - it was a little dark grey Nokia. Then I had a pink flippy one, then I had the lovely slidey one I've got now. *g*
7. When did your family first acquire a colour TV?
Erm... 1975 maybe? I think that was colour...
8. When did your family acquire a second TV?
Never did.
9. Did you ever own “designer jeans”?
Nope.
10. Have you ever been to a disco?
Have I been to a disco?! I think the first one was the school disco in... 1979? I worked out what I was going to wear, and was told absolutely not by my mum. Since I was only 10 at the time she won. There was usually a school disco at some point every year in high school. When did discos just turn into clubs though? I think I still remember calling them discos when I was at Manchester uni, but it just turned into going out, and whatever the name of the place was. Ah, the Cyprus Tavern... *g* And eventually we were going clubbing instead. The last time was on someone's hen night, and we all looked around and went huh and decided to go and find somewhere we could sit and drink and make ourselves heard instead... *g*
11. How many places (towns, states, countries) have you lived in?
Oh blimey... Well, starting from the biggest things, just for fun...
- Two hemispheres - north and south. *g*
- Three continents - Australasia, Europe and North America.
- Six countries - Australia, Isle of Man, England, USA, Denmark, Scotland.
- Four counties - Somerset, Cambridgeshire, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire.
- Five states - Florida, California, Alaska, New Jersey/New York. And Victoria. *g*
- Eighteen cities/towns/villages - Here (Somerset), Wookey Hole, There (Cambs.), Melbourne, Fairbanks (Alaska, USA), Trull, Combe Florey, Leeds, Edinburgh, Copenhagen, Manchester, Sulby, Ramsey, Mortlake, Macarthur, Bunyip, Doreen, Birregurra... I think that was basically it. There were many many different houses within most of those places, and I was back and forth between some places a bit too... *g* No wonder my brother asked if I was settling down when I moved into this place. *vbg*
12. Have any of your contemporary friends died?
No.
13. Are your parents still living?
Mum is, Dad died when I was in high school.
14. Do you have any gray hairs?
One or two, every now and then!
15. Did you or your family own a Betamax?
Nope.
16. How did you spend New Year’s Eve 1999/2000?
In Alaska, at a wee house party. At one point a bloke taught me how to crack a whip (Indiana Jones style). And there was an aurora instead of fireworks. And snow. Oh, and I had a broken wrist from slipping on the ice earlier that month!
17. What’s the oldest article of clothing you still wear?
Possibly my purple fleece, which was a going away present when I left my first teaching job. I don't think I wear anything older than that... though I've been eyeing up a wee army bag that we all had in Year 12 for the last day of school, and I recently found in my storage. We... um... dressed up as crack commandos and took over our final school assembly. I got to hold a water pistol to the headteacher's head. What can I say, apparently we were whacky... Anyway, I keep thinking the bag might actually be a good size to use sometimes... *g*
18. Do you eat your vegetables?
Well, what with being mostly vegetarian and all... *g* Although not if they're just boiled, unless I really really have to.
19. Are the privileges of adulthood worth the responsibilities?
Not sure yet...
20. Do you feel like an adult?
Not usually - do I havta? Although maybe when I do my taxes, that's pretty grown up... *g*
21. Is youth wasted on the young?
Um... I dunno about that - which bits of youth? I could do with it coming around again, mind... well, the bits with lots of bouncy energy anyway - whatever happened to those?

Date: Saturday, 14 February 2015 12:15 pm (UTC)The aurora was brilliant - we thought about going down to the city fireworks and all, but it was pretty nice where we were.... *g*

Date: Saturday, 14 February 2015 11:53 am (UTC)You've had such a varied and interesting life just since we've connected on LJ, I'm not surprised that your list of places that you've lived is so long! I envy you that. Do you have a favorite?

Date: Saturday, 14 February 2015 12:19 pm (UTC)Ooh - a favourite place to live... The places I stay in tend to be favourites at the time, really, but... well I do miss Alaska, I loved living in Fairbanks... But then if I went back it wouldn't be the same, because it's about the people and things happening at the time as well as just the place... I loved Manchester for the same reasons, and I miss it alot too sometimes, but the last time I went back it was almost just another big city... Please do the meme, then I can ask you the same question! *g* (*avoids asking you now as a canny way to encourage you to do meme* *g*)
I still can't imagine only being here mind - maybe if I had a job that took me off to lots of other places and I could come back to here... *g*

Date: Saturday, 14 February 2015 04:12 pm (UTC)Wow - you've certainly lived all over the place! You must drive friends and family nuts with having to scribble your address out of their address books and put in yet another... *g*
