(Oops, thought I'd posted this this morning - but it helps if you actually hit that button... *headdesk*)

Bit of an odd day today - started off by having to deal with the theft from our foodsaving project, and later that day it turned out to be someone who was recognisable as often going into the shop, and who possibly needs help, so we're trying to get in touch/work it out that way. But not my favourite start to a weekend, I have to say, and it all took up far too much time...

On a happier note, I remembered just in time that it was the Pros Watch on Twitch, and it was nice to "see" people there - *waves* Nice to see our lads too! I'm looking forward to more lads in my life again (and writing?) now that I'm in a warm dry (I do keep harping on about that, don't I?!) new place, and starting to get sorted again (new office has been delayed until next weekend though, cos the flooring shop was shut when M tried to go). I have at least been re-reading Siren by Sebastian, but not yet found the "worst line in any Pros fic" that [livejournal.com profile] tinturtle was wondering about the other week!

Then there was the usual supermarket run...
2020-10-17 01autumnroads 2020-10-17 02autumnsupermarket
One thing about supermarkets, they're quite often surrounded by lovely autumnal trees!

I finally made apple crumble with the apples from my old place.
2020-10-17 03applecrumble 2020-10-17 04applecrumble&custard
And the custard was with milk from this farm too, bought at the milk station at the end of the farm track (hee - milk taken from here to the milk station and then brought back again *g*) I chose pumpkin spice to flavour it this time, but couldn't really taste it in the custard. I didn't put any sugar in the custard apart from that syrup though, and it was entirely sweet enough. No sugar in the apples either, so there was only brown sugar in the crumble, and it was pretty good, if I do say so. *g* Walnuts in the crumble too - I always forget how much I like walnuts. *g*

Rabbiting, I am... I'd better go and get on with today, I think! I had wondered about going off to the seaside or something, but in fact I just feel like going out into the fields metal detecting, which is nicely peaceful and meditative with a side-order of exercise, and pondering my garden-to-be, and autumn, and perhaps the lads... so that's what I'm going to do. *g*
byslantedlight: (Default)
Another not-good-at-working day, with the result that it was a late night again... But that was also because I couldn't resist going out into the blue skies for a couple of hours (it was only meant to be one, of course...) with my detector before the sunset...

It was a lovely evening on the farm, with birds singing and mushrooms peeping at me from the grass. My favourite Gruffalo tree looks like they're enjoying it too. *g*
2020-10-16 01VillageView 2020-10-16 02mushroom

I found a few bits, possibly historically interesting, and then as the sun was setting and I was heading for home, there was one last beautifully clear high pitched tone - the kind of tone that sings gold! or silver! (apparently...) And I still don't know if it does, because this turned out to be a gun!
2020-10-16 03sunset 2020-10-16 04detectinggun
It's a little three-inch gun in fact, with "Special Agent" on both sides, but for just a minute I wondered if it might be real - it's heavy enough for it!

Ended the day on bad news though - someone stole a bag of food from our foodsaving volunteers tonight, just said "I'll take that" and walked out with it as the volunteer was collecting it! Sods! They can have regular bags of free food if they like! There's cctv of whoever it was, so hopefully the police will be able to track them down... But sorting this out isn't what I wanted to be doing this weekend! Grrr...

Ending this on a brighter note though - I'm trying to decide whether to sign up for Yuletide again this year. I quite enjoyed it last year, and the story was well-received (more A03 kudos than any of my Pros stories, in fact!) I've a fairly limited range of offerings and wants, but then I did get a lovely little Mathey/Lynes story for myself last year, so... well actually yes, perhaps I will sign up again!

It's been a funny kind of day. I know I've done useful things, but for the life of me I can barely work out what I have done...

One thing, though, was deal with a box of pictures that I found had also caught the damp in my old place. I took them out, put them in the sun and cleaned them off, and now they're drying further (I hope) by the radiator. This one couldn't be saved though - the frame (relatively cheap Ikea, luckily, though still a waste) was gone all through, and although the front of the poster looks fine, the back was all marked. I know it's just a poster, but I did rather love my Parkes Telescope whirling lights, especially because it was also a happy memory from visiting the actual Parkes Telescope (from The Dish, one of my favourite films) with [livejournal.com profile] kiwisue, and I'd looked forward to having it up in my shed-office... *sighs sadly*

Apart from taking my recycling up to the end of the farm track, and getting some milk, I was home all day today though. And this is what my place looked like when I came back from that little job.
2020-10-15 02Athome 2020-10-15 03Night
Not bad, really. *g*
byslantedlight: (Default)
Finished an ongoing proofreading job, which is more fun than the usual (kids education books) but did seem to be dragging a bit as I waited for the docs. Nice to have cleared that from my books (as Nico Rathe might say... *g*). And I had rather alot of regular proofreading today too, and actually finished earlier than my normal 1.00am sessions, so yeay - not that I took myself to bed much earlier, cos I needed to prepare software etc. for a work meeting for the next night, and then you want to wind down... *headdesk* But I did make time earlier to go for a walk up to a neighbouring hamlet... (actually that first pic is looking back to my village!)

It's looking very autumn now - and a bit winter-ish (by tradition rather than reality): look at the holly berries on that bush! I don't think I've ever seen such a thickly-berried holly bush! Of course they do say that lots of holly berries means a hard winter - hmmn! I guess we'll see!
2020-10-14 03Teasels 2020-10-14 04HollyBerries

Lots of other berries around too, which I love seeing.
2020-10-14 05OtherBerries 2020-10-14 06RiverBerries

I also adored these rainbow sheep! Of course since doing that spinning course last year, I know what the rainbow marks mean... *g*

Bumping into an old neighbour and stopping for a chat (how convivial!) meant that it was sunset before I was heading back - but what a sunset!

It was getting properly dark by the time I came back, but it was nice to have been out.
2020-10-13 04DuskSeedheads 2020-10-13 05DuskGate
Too early to hear owls from the gate tonight, but I peered out my back door later at night and gazed at the stars, and took deep breaths... (and shivered a bit in the chilly wind *g*)
byslantedlight: (Default)
Started off well today, finishing off shortening the curtains I bought for the kitchen window...
2020-10-12 01curtainmaking 2020-10-12 01curtainsup
But I have since realised that I should have gone for a blind here rather than curtains, because even though they're a good length for the window they're probably going to get wet from the sink/dishes sometimes... rats. I had curtains at Old Place, but of course they were set into the window recess, so not near the sink. I didn't think of that when I was asked which I prefer here... Maybe I need to reorganise the window with one of those spring-loaded poles inside the recess to hold the curtains, and then sort of half-curtains on the curtain rod that's there now, just for the look of it... But that's just all going to have to wait until I've at least finished unpacking!

This is what the day looked like, pretty much all day, so I stayed snug at home...
2020-10-12 02RainDay

...until, that is, the foodsaving volunteer told me at the last minute she was home sick and couldn't make it, and it was really too late to ask anyone else, so off I went. On the bright side it stopped raining just before I left!
2020-10-12 03FoodsavingView 2020-10-12 04NightGate
And when I got back I went and stood out by the gate and tried to take a night photo. Not very successful (with my phone) but it was so peaceful, except for owls hooting... *sighs happily*

My plan for being able to just get on with work doesn't seem to be kicking in yet though - it was another 1.30am work night last night, hence being behind with this post... ack! (And then lj didn't want to load for me this morning, which was a bit worrying - thank goodness it finally did! I must update my back-ups...)
byslantedlight: (Default)
Probably a bit predictable that today was later and slower than I meant it to be. I didn't even get around the rest of the Yard Sale Trail, which I'd totally meant to do. Instead I ended up heading off to the supermarket, where autumn and the clouds were looking a bit dramatic, then home feeling oddly light-headed, and decided that since it was Sunday I'd fortify myself with tea and toast and put on an ep of All Creatures Great and Small, which I'm re-watching with joy.
2020-10-11 01Shopping 2020-10-11 02CatSunset
Then I gathered my energy, sorted out the car and put all the boxes into it to get them out of the house, and headed off into the village to drop off my own pre-Yard-Sale-Trail earnings (it was all in aid of our village pre-school), passing Farm Cat on the way...

Having been a bit grey and threatening most of the day, it turned into a gorgeous late afternoon...
2020-10-11 03SunsetGate 2020-10-11 04DrangIvy

...and then a very pretty evening, too. *g*
2020-10-11 05CowGate 2020-10-11 06SunGoneGate

I even managed to pin and sew and pin the other bit of the curtains that I'm shortening for the kitchen - yeay! It's been quite a productive weekend, what with one thing and another... *g*

Hope you've had glorious days, whatever you've been up to! *g*
byslantedlight: (Default)
I didn't forget to post yesterday, it just turned out to be another day running (although sometimes strolling) around like a mad thing, and more so in the couple of hours up to midnight, bizarrely!

Our village is having a Yard Sale Trail weekend, so I went off to have a wander around first. I only got halfway, and will have to do the others today! The ivy is getting ever more red, and a closer look with slightly less wind shows me [livejournal.com profile] tinturtle was right - this is just an oak tree! I don't think I've ever seen one so gloriously golden as this one, though!
2020-10-10 01AutumnIvy 2020-10-10 02AutumnOak

Back home with tired feet for lunch, and I was determined to get out metal detecting even just for a couple of hours, so I decided to do that before the forecast rain potentially came (it didn't *g*). The field I chose had been recently rotivated, but I think it must also have been covered with "green manure" because it was full of bits of plastic and glass and broken screws and things (green manure - hah!) I'll have to ask the farmers what they put on there... I gave up and headed up to another field I'd never done before (which I can see from my window *g*) and found something proper - not sure what it is, but it was a thing!
2020-10-10 05DetectingFind
Possibly a cutlery handle - the other side is hollow with a bit jutting out at the top, which would possibly have attached to the other side of it. Or I might be making that up! It looks really familiar for some reason though...

I had visitors to my garden too! It's a rubbish picture because I was behind glass and the sun was shining at just the wrong angle, but - partridges! They eventually jumped up onto the wall and over into landlord's garden. Partridges! *g*
2020-10-10 03PartridgeGarden 2020-10-10 04NightMist
And my final photo, taken at the end of a long day that was really the start of the next one - I nipped outside to see if it was clear enough for stars, and found the fields were shrouded in mist that looked like this when I took a photo of it! I could actually see stars too - Cassaeopia, and what SkyMap swore was Neptune shining bright, though I'm not at all convinced - too bright and too red (and I've just checked, and Neptune is definitely a binoculars-only object, which is what I thought. Stoopid SkyMap!), so I'm guessing Mars, or maybe Jupiter or Saturn. Anyway - how fab to be able to step outside my door again and see the stars! I have missed that! *g*

Time-consuming chaos... )
byslantedlight: (Default)
I decided today was going to start off calmly and I was going to stay in absolute control of the chaos - so of course the first thing was an email asking if I'd received a second job for today... *headdesk* But that was okay, because I got it done, and even did some closet clearing and bathroom-bag clearing, and went for a walk while the sky was brilliantly blue (and the wind was very cold - more clothes tomorrow!) I even managed to change the address on my driving licence and my vehicle reg. online (and wasn't that more of a palaver than just sending the things off used to be...) But I did all that and got my work done before midnight, and made leek and cauliflower soup for lunch, so I'm actually feeling quite ahead... *g*

Loved this cloud as I walked up to the village, with its slash of brilliant blue sky... *g*
2020-10-09 01VillageCloud 2020-10-09 02VillageAutumn
And is this a Japanese maple? I'm probably wrong, but gorgeous colours!

I've no idea what these round things are - fruit of some kind? They almost looked like conkers, so seedpods? Anyone know? I don't remember seeing them before!
2020-10-09 03MysteryFruit 2020-10-09 04SeagullsAndCow
And there are so many seagulls around that I swear I felt quite seaside-y as I walked home... *g*

The weekend is mostly set fair (except for that rain that's suddenly crept into the forecast for tomorrow) so I'm determined to do two things - more sorting out and packing away (and rearranging again because I've found the only loft-space trapdoor that opens outwards instead of inwards, and is thus blocked by my second fandom shelves... *sigh*), and then I'm going to go detecting! I miss detecting! It's been weeks since I dug up crap history from the fields! It must happen tomorrow. Or the next day. *g* Or both!

Also, there is going to be Pros in my life, by hook or by crook! I re-read Siren by Sebastian this morning, to try and find an answer to [livejournal.com profile] tinturtle's question about the worst line in Pros fandom. - no luck so far. I mean come on, this is Sebastian! So I shall read through the rest of the series, and see if I can find it... *g*

Oh, bliss - the weekend!

The cows were in a different barn...
2020-10-08 02moos 2020-10-08 03pigeoncourting
...and I watched two pigeons in a strange relationship... The female kept trying to put her wing over the male, and he'd intermittently shake her off. She'd try and nuzzle in to talk to him, but he wasn't having any. Eventually she flew off in a huff, and then he flew off too. It was all so very human!

Went for a walk around the paddocks - that hill is where the bullbeggar lives. I'm quite convinced of that from this picture!

Then I came across what looks more like a pooka than an ordinary bunny!

Still some blackberries around, too.

Two of my favourite trees - this lone tree (which isn't at all alone, but looks very dramatic *g*), and the Gruffalo tree! *g*

And finally - sunset.

...but apparently taking time out to appreciate the wildlife around me!

It was finally not raining today, so I went back to Old House to collect the rest of my boxes from the Slaughterhouse, my plants from the garden, and to do my final clean. I thought it would be a fairly quick thing, but I reckoned without people wanting to chat, and it ended up taking the entire working day! And I still had work to do... On the bright side, it was nice to chat and I got it all done and handed over my keys - I'm fully moved!

Loved the birds on the roof this morning - crows, seagulls and pigeons, perching together to survey the world in bird-y harmony. *g*

Old Landlord spotted Ratty under the birdfeeders - wonder if it's her family that scrabbled about above me all night at my old place?!
2020-10-07 02ratty 2020-10-07 03ladybird
And then I spotted this ladybird as I brought my plants into New Garden - I think it's the first and only one I've seen all year...

Even when I got back home I couldn't settle straight to work - it was the last day for reactions to the proposed development of 129 homes in a tiny space right in the centre of our village, and I hadn't had a chance to write my letter yet... so I did that. 129 homes right in the centre of the village that's already struggling for parking for the few shops we have - it's a ridiculous proposal, with no thought for the practicalities of how that many more households (and especially their vehicles, bearing in mind they get two parking spaces each) are going to be able to fit into the village, especially since they're not on the edge of the village, but right in the middle... and I bet they push it through anyway because the developers will make far more money cramming houses into a small site than they would using the site to benefit the village... :(

And then I had dinner and felt very sleepy and finished a really difficult medical document that should only have taken a day but took two... *sighs* At least it's finished!

And now - bed! Oh, bed! And Astreiant... *vbg*

Opened the curtains to these views this morning - blue sky! A rainbow!

2020-10-06 05autumnvines 2020-10-06 06autumnvines

The Other Side...

Tuesday, 6 October 2020 12:52 am
byslantedlight: (Default)
Well, I'm in! I've moved house! Again...! And it's taken me two weeks to spare the time to post to lj, even though I've been on holiday for those two weeks. What has happened these last few years? There was a time when I would have given you all a blow by blow account, daily... and I wanted to, but turns out that time has become a slippery thing...

Importantly and rather blissfully though, I have moved house! I no longer live in a somewhat cramped and crowded and claustrophobic little cottage on a street in a village, I now live in a spacious little open plan annexe on a farm by the village... Think the lads in Larton, where they walk across the fields to the pubs and all. *g* Although this farm has a very nicely kept paved track, where I do not anticipate going squelch (your starter for ten - what's the quote? *g*) And it has a brand new milk station at the end of the farm track too, where you can buy fresh pasteurised milk in refillable bottles, flavour it with pina colada syrup and then make the most amazing custard from it... *g*

The move all went reasonably smoothly really, so that I'm sort of waiting for the other shoe to drop... The lads who moved me twice before turned out to be free for this move - and free to change days to avoid the start of the wet weather last Wednesday! Which meant I had a day less to pack, but hey-ho - we were dry! Here's how it went.

Tuesday 29th September 2020
Here is moving-day calm - the moment before the lads started bringing in my chaos of stuff!
2020-09-29MovingDayCalm
See the glorious sun shining? And there was a bit of a breeze, and it was the perfect moving day... *g*

But then my interwebz refused to play just as I was about to post this last night, so now it's Frustrating Thursday. Which I know doesn't alliterate, but I can't think of a th word that fits right now, especially as I still have to finish work tonight. *sigh* So - have yesterday, which was far nicer!

It's a Wonderful Wednesday today, because I've taken the day off! I'm at the bit of the year where I've been proofreading for soooo long that my brain and eyes are starting to fry. I've had less work since this covid-19 thing started, but I'm also finding it harder to concentrate - and I wasn't finding it easy before that! So I'm building in some sanity days off, because I just have to. *g* And today I did happy-making things.

Checked Servant of Two Masters to see if I could hear [livejournal.com profile] ali15son's whisper of "Oh sorry" from Bodie to Doyle - and I could! It's there! He says it! I so love that we're still finding new things in the eps 43 years later! *vbg* Have the lads in celebration!
BD tyingupbaddie2

I was metal detecting on my permission on Sunday (*sighs happily*) and I actually felt in control of my metal detector for the first time - yeay! I was able to set the settings and recognise when it was finding iron compared to other metals (not as easy as you'd think!) I dug some of the iron anyway, and was dead chuffed when I turned out to be right - Victorian iron nails, my obligatory horseshoe (probably Victorian again, I think) - and then three signals that didn't seem quite like iron! Okay, I'm getting off my Wednesday topic, aren't I?! *headdesk* Anyway - I found a lead splodge, an odd fragment of loopy metal with decoration on it - and my first coin! *g* Okay, it was only a 1905 Edward VII halfpenny - but I found a coin! *vbg*

And the whole reason I started talking about that was because someone said the odd little loopy thing might be a buckle fragment, and my book on buckles (shush, it's cool!) arrived today, and it does indeed turn out to be a bit of probably-eighteenth century buckle! Wheee! How it got into the middle of that field, far from any apparent houses, I don't know, because it must have been a relatively delicate buckle. Look - my bit of buckle, in the middle of a comparative picture for dating. *g*
BuckleFragment (WhiteheadBook)
(Not quite the same shape, but they had rectangular ones around the same time. *g*)

I also bought a mixer - the kind that you make cakes and things with. *g* I always want to call them Mixmasters, cos that's what my mum had. Still miss that one, it was perfect! *g* Anyway, someone local was selling it, and I suddenly realised that I could perhaps make space in that corner, and she was kind enough to let me try it out before I actually bought it, and it worked beautifully. It's a shame I took the cake out far too early and the fact that it was a peach cake with peaches in meant that I couldn't skewer test it, and that it fell apart, partly-uncooked, and had to be put back in on a roasting tray to sort itself out. *headdesk* So no pretty picture as I was planning - but it did still taste good. Although it needed a pinch of salt! Mum's cakes always had a pinch of salt, and this was why! *g*

And then I made pesto for dinner, and I love homemade pesto, and I was lazy and re-watched some Detectorists. *vbg* And - rather oddly, considering I'm reading the Aubrey/Maturin books set in the early 1800s (hey - that's when my buckle might be from! *vbg*), I thought about my WWII Pros fic, which is still sitting in my WIP folder...

What else? Turns out you get sunburned in completely different places when you're metal detecting, so even though I used suncream, I missed half the places the sun caught me. Ouch! Oh - the cows are out of the field that's only just over the fence! Which is actually a bit frustrating, cos I spotted that when it was too late to detect on Wednesday, was trying to work this morning and couldn't, when the weather was still nice enough to detect - and now it's forecast rain all weekend! Although I have taken two days off next week... *g*

Erm... and I wrote a Prosfic! Just a wee little one, but it was fun and makes me want to write again... Oh, but there's too many things to do!

How're you doing this week? *g*
byslantedlight: (Default)
I keep meaning and meaning to post again, and I haven't for ages. But tonight I want to just post some pics for [livejournal.com profile] firefly1311, and generally say hi again to everyone at the same time. Hi again! *g*

It's been a glorious few weeks over here, and now we have clouds and rain for a bit, which the ground is sooooo thankful for! And veg plots and flower beds, and metal detectorists who want to dig in the hard dry ground are thankful for it too. *g* (Though it's not really been much yet...)

There's been some detectoring, and some scarecrow-making for our village scarecrow trail...

So even though I'm back at work again, it's not too shabby really. Driving me slightly mad that my usual exam-work break from proofreading isn't on this year, and I'm definitely going to have to take more breaks as I go along (otherwise my eyes and my brain give up entirely *g*), but... Oh, and I've started my re-read of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin books. I've been waiting so patiently because I knew once I started I wouldn't want to read anything else until I'd read all 27 or so, and then I realised I'd been patient for about ten years, and that means I'm definitely allowed to indulge! Plus I'd forgotten just how joyful they are. *g*

How're you doing? *g*
byslantedlight: (Default)
Well, it's that day - Day 100 of 100 Days of Happiness! And naturally it had to be a challenging one... I woke late, with a headache, and perhaps rather foolishly a decision not to take painkillers because it was nearly a week later and I'd better see how I'm really feeling. I also, for some reason, had a slightly dodgy tummy. All in all, I couldn't concentrate on work either, with the consequence that as usual I'm here in the small hours trying to get finished. Which will mean I'll wake late tomorrow. Plus it was colder again - though at least it didn't rain. Grumble, grumble, grump!

So - I finally decided I'd better go down the garden for a look around in the vague hope that I might find something happy to post about! And it worked. *g*

The sky! The sky was doing gorgeous things with clouds! And when I got to the bottom of the field and peered over the hedge at the hill, there was the moon looking all big and pale and gorgeous.

Also, as I stood near the Slaughterhouse, eying the gorgeous sky, I realised that I could hear baby birds from up under the roof, where I'd seen ravens going in and out. So I watched, and I watched, and I watched...

...and sure enough the parents put in an appearance! It took me a fair few shots to get something recognisably bird-like rather than a scrappy black mass of something in the air, but that was fun too - and that is happy-making. *g*

And we have to finish with some flowers, because they are always happy-making. Some blossom still lingering on the fruit trees (hmmn, is that the quince?) And the yellow roses, standing high above the trellis against the gorgeous sky.

So - I started this 100 days way back on January 26th, when the world was a very different place... The UK was still (just) in the EU, I didn't yet own a metal detector, and people were allowed to leave their houses whenever they felt like it, and for no apparent reason at all... Perhaps a strange happy at the end of this 100 days is that I have a bit more faith in more people than I did at the start. There are some idiots out there, and there are some frightening idiots, but the vast majority of people in the world (that we're able to see, anyway) seem to be showing that maybe the Doctor was right after all - maybe humans are basically good and able to look out for each other. Some of them do it by going out and doing wonderful things, some do it just by staying home when they're told to, to avoid hurting other people, but it seems like more people are doing those things than trying to push their own selfish agendas. Most people are caring more about other people than they are about money, and I find that quite happy-making.

Now let's see if I can keep posting, even if I don't put "100 Days" in the subject header... *g*
