Nicked from everyone who did this last week - I did it on Friday too, cos fun meme, but I didn't get a chance to post that day, and of course since I'd done it at work... in my break, obviously. Like now. *g*

1 - Go to a random wikipedia article — The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.
2 - Go to "Random quotations" — The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.
3 - Go to Flickr's "explore the last seven days" — Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.
4 - Use Photoshop, MS Paint, or similar to put it all together.
5 - Post it with this text.

So... does anyone out there use GIMP instead of Photoshop or whatever? I've just found out that it's a free downloadable thingie, and thought I might - has anyone tried it? What d'you reckon to it? It's on all the computers here at work, and I used it for this, and it seems quite good...

I love how compatible the band name and album title are.

I know a few people who've laboured to get the hang of gimp, but since they were mostly asking for help from PS users who didn't know the programme and were therefore unable to help, I don't really know how good the programme actually is. You can certainly make some decent stuff with it.

Hmmn - well I know I've laboured to get the hang of PS (back when I did have access to it), so maybe they're not terrible difficult...

The album cover worked out alright, so I suppose that's a good sign. I'll probably brave it, unless someone tells me dire things about stability or something, just so that I've got something a bit more complex than Paint... Cheers!

I've used GIMP, before a co-worker gave me their older PS, and it could do a lot of advanced stuff, but it was really hard to find out *how* to do it. I spent hours searching the net for answers, and usually found them, but it was a bit tedious.
Come to think, I have to do similar things with PS, because their help file isn't all that enlightening, either, in many cases.

Hmmn - I tend to struggle on even the basic stuff, so I probably won't get as far as that advanced stuff anyway... *g* I can never figure out PS in fact, which is why I'm still struggling with either - I have a low battle-tedium threshold, I think! *g* So maybe there's not much in it between PS and GIMP... I'm thinking of MS Word and OpenOffice, the latter of which I'm using now - I love the shareware principle of it, but there's so much that just completely throws me, or doesn't quite seem to work yet, so I wondered if it might be a bit like that... Maybe I'll just cross fingers and jump! *g* Thanks!

GIMP and PS are hard to figure out (imo), especially for occasional use. So, definitely a battle ground! :D
There are so many hidden functions they don't even mention in their help file, and if I don't use the program for a couple of weeks, I've forgotten all the tricks I learned, except the basics.

Eep! *g*

But really, I can if you like... give me a shout if it's lousy timing for you just now and I'll throw something nowhere-near-as-pretty together... *g*

That's a very cool album *g*.

I don't use GIMP, as I can't work out what else you need to download to make it work on Macs. I've got Photoshop but never use it, as all the training sessions I've had on it have gone in one ear and out the other *g*.

I'm very fond of http://www.picnik.com/

It's easy to use, is free, and I've had OK results with it.

Hee - thank you! We were recording for months, I tell you... *g*

I'm lousy with Photoshop too - had it for ages and never got much further than putting text on images. Oh, and I worked out that transparency thing at one point, though I might have forgotten it! I'm reeeeeally basic... *g* On the other hand, I can't twirl text to make it go down the side of an image in Paint, which is all I've got now (although, hmmmn - I just had a wonder about a possible way of doing that, just then!) and I'm ever hopeful that I might one day be able to come up with slightly better banners than I have done so far... Mind you, I suspect talent has alot to do with that too... *sighs*

Hmmn - shall have a look at picnik too, cheers! *g*

Oh, there's a vote for, then - cheers!

Free is often good, but as I was saying to someone above, I'm having to use Open Office at the moment, and while I'm ever so glad that I've got some WP package, I wish it was a little... clearer to use! Less glitchy... *g*

It's a fun meme - I loved seeing everyone's covers! I seem to remember liking yours I was at work when everyone was doing them, and then out gallivanting until after midnight, and then got caught up in something else on Saturday - oh, car tyres! - and... I hardly commented on anyone elses - waah! But they were cool!

nice one :)
You know what, the shadowy man reminds me of MS in LoS, maybe I watched too many vids and DVD's lately *g*

I've got gimp on my pc, but it drives me nuts. I give it a try from time to time but then I go back to PhotoImpact, which is easy to use and suits me perfect.
Well, I failed as well with Photoshop, so it might be my personal problem then ;)

Oooh - oh yes he does now, doesn't he! I do adore LoS... Which is the whole band-ish irony of my album, because we have much use for MS in LoS and in anything else too... *g*

Eeh - a bad review for Gimp! Well actually I struggle with Photoshop too, so I suspect I shall struggle the same amount with anything similar... I'm just not a huge graphics girl... We can have personal problems together! *g*
