So... I finished this session's marking - huzzah! Very odd it is too - didn't know what to do with myself last night, not having to sit in front of the computer and decipher panicked handwriting for a couple of hours, so I watched some more Northern Exposure - one of my favourite ones, First Snow, which made me just a wee bit more homesick for Alaska... NE's pretty close in alot of ways (though the trees are way to tall for where I was... *g*)

Oh, and hmmmn - this is what my world looked like in February 2007!

But this is what my world looked like on Saturday, when I went off for an adventure somewhere new, which turned out to be the noisiest forest in the whole world...

There was mist, and a lake, and ancient, ancient trees...

And paths through clearings and through woods...

This was a lovely old tree...

And this one was an elegant old lady...

But this one had eyes... and this one had skellingbones dribbling down it! Ooooh... *g*

But over it all - Stansted airport! The M11! A thousand different roaring things, so that instead of feeling all peaceful for my walk, and quiet and still, the modern world was roaring and thrumming in my head and I had to get out of there! It was weird too - the deeper I walked into the woods, the louder it all was... Which is a real shame, because the trees were lovely - and properly old too, over 600 years, some of them - the "pollarded" oaks... Stoopid roaring world...

Except that stoopid roaring world also has Remakes, Reboots and Re-imaginings on at the BFI at Southbank tonight and I'm going! I'm going to see the lads on the big screen! Wheeeee! I suppose it's too much to hope that there'll be movie posters, but... *sighs happily* And there'll be an ep of The New Professionals too, which I've never seen, and which [livejournal.com profile] agentxpndble very cleverly and timelyly posted about last night...

And now I suppose I'd better go to work for - whee, three hours! - so that I can hit the road and brave the cold and get meself to the big smoke... *vbg*

Those trees are fabulous! I wonder why they made the noise louder - some sort of echo effect? Or was it just that you wouldn't expect that sort of noise in a forest and noticed it more?

I remember your fascinating posts from Alaska and especially the ice-bird.

Hope you enjoyed the R,R and R!!

They're great, aren't they - I love trees... *g* Actually I think it may have been the opposite - on the side I entered the forest, the noise was muffled by the forest, but as I went through there was less and less padding between me and it... maybe. Or maybe it was to do with wind directions, or... it was just odd, and most... disconcerting. Forests should be quiet places, with the shush of the branches and the rustle of the leaves, and the sound of birdsong, not... enginery...

I can't decide if taking those Alaska pics feels like just yesterday or if it feels like years and years ago - three years ago, in fact... Only three years ago? I dunno!

Not been to R,R &R yet - that's tonight - wheeee! *g*

What a shame that modern life intrudes so rudely on such an enchanted spot. And just look at that lake... one almost expects to see a lady's arm rise from the waters, bearing a magic sword.

Yes! It was rather like that - or might have been with fewer screaming toddlers on bikes, and parents walking and chatting on mobiles at the same time...! Honestly!

Such a foggy day all around the east though - though I gather there was blue skies and birdsong just a bit further south in London, very odd!

so sorry that your adventure was spoiled by Stansted airport and the motorway. That's rotten. I always wanted to visit Hatfield forest, especially after reading the book about it by Oliver Rackham. When we used to live on the fen-edge, every so often I had a craving for trees, proper, big trees you could walk amongst, and then had to go south of Cambridge to find them.

Thanks for the link to [livejournal.com profile] agentxpendble's post, very interesting!

Eeep - catching up again, sorry!

I've got to admit that I quite like visiting the fens, and all - I popped over to Anglesey Abbey yesterday - but I didn't feel entirely comfortable living there (House of Doom aside). I like trees too, and there's something that feels treeless about Cambs. east, even when you're staring at a tall tree!

It was a shame about the airport and the motorway - I did wonder if it'd be like that when I looked at the map, but... ah well, hey-ho! Still better to have the trees there - and it was a seriously busy place too, so presumably it's great for the locals!

Beautiful mossy trees, and I like the lake and the road, very atmospheric! :-)

Sorry - late catching up again...

It was very atmospheric in some ways - maybe it comes out more in the pics cos you can't hear the sound of engines roaring all around when you look at them!

Such beautiful trees - they look so serene it's hard to believe there was so much noise. Ack! I love the ice bird too.

Have fun in the big city tonight!

*running to catch up with replies* - sorry!

The pics do look serene, don't they - shame about the real life roar of engines! Right now I can hear birds of all kinds out my window, and it's so much more peaceful!
