Two things have made me happy today. First of all, just now, finally finishing a whole day's (well, more than a day's actually) work and getting it sent off - yeay! No photo, but yeay!

And then this morning, for which I have this picture:
26 2014-05-28 Wimpole Rose
I was off at Wimpole again, this time doing a house induction, which meant I got taken around all rooms on the "tourist route" and told about them, which was very cool. It was before the hall was opened up too of course, so the dim quiet of the day, with shutters closed and everything sleeping still... *g* It's all very cool, with missing windows and secret doors (not that they go to secret rooms), and the servants doors covered in red baize on their side so that they knew they were about to go into a part of the house frequented by the family, and there are special tours that volunteers can go on to see all the other rooms that aren't open to the public - I'm so going on one of those! It's so nice to do "doing history" again, I didn't realise how much I missed it - even if I won't get paid for it. And then when I'd finished, I went out, and the rain had briefly stopped, and the world smelled all green and of flowers and fresh air and summer - and there was this rose, sitting cheerfully by the door to the gardens!

Oh no! Three! Three things! I finished Fairs' Point too (which is also a sad thing, so I immediately started re-reading it... just occasionally that happens... *g*). It's fab - I do rather like it... *g*

Hope your Wednesday's been good, even if it may well have been wet...

When I was a student (which is rather a long time ago) I used to work as a guide at Castle Howard in Yorkshire, in the Easter and summer vacs. It was fabulous learning all about the place including lots of esoteric information just in case a tourist asked an ununsual question. We got paid, too, plus tips, and an afternoon tea!! Your experiences at Wimpole are reminding me of it all! And the rose, of course, is beautiful. (I assume you meant rose and not road...)

Oh nice - though I wish we got paid and tips and afternoon tea for volunteering here! (Though the NT doesn't seem to pay even its actual staff very well - I keep looking at jobs advertised and wrinkling my nose at the experience you're expected to have for the pay that's being offered...)

I'm looking forward to guiding at Wimpole, for exactly the reasons you've mentioned, too! And hee - yes, rose (fixed now) - I remember thinking of how to describe it as I was typing, as being beside the road by the stable block, except it wasn't really a road, more a path, so I didn't - except clearly in the second it took me to think all that, it was a "road"! *g*

And ooh, while you're here - I've just been posting another book-post, and while wandering around for book covers I was reminded of Alex Beeston. Was it yourself who recommended her m/m books once, or am I thinking of someone else?

Not sure I've heard of Alex Beeston. Alex Beecroft, though... I don't think I've recommended her to you though I thought of doing so. She's on my f'list and she writes very well. Her historical research is amazingly detailed. The thing is, a lot of her books are Age of Sail which doesn't particularly appeal to me. However, I loved Too Many Fairy Princes for the fantasy, and The Reluctant Beserker for the history. She lives in your general part of the world - Essex or Suffolk or somewhere round there. I'm thinking of buying the two Bomber's Moon books which combine fairies with WW2 flying...

I haven't read your review of The Enlightenment Trilogy or rather I haven't opened the 'cut' because I've bought the first book and want to start with no preconceptions other than what you say at the beginning of your post. I do agree about the covers - dire!! I can only assume they used 'stock' covers to save money. Some of the smaller publishers do that and get it so wrong!!

Lol - you do like to pick me up tactfully when I mistype things! Yes, I mean Alex Beecroft... *g* Hmmn - must have been someone else then, because I distinctly remember a discussion. I rather like Age of Sail, so perhaps I'll take a look after all - I wasn't trusting m/m romance at all when her name came up before, so... I like the sound of WW2 flying and fairies, mind! *g*

And fair enough - I wouldn't read a post about a book I was about to read either. I shall just hope you enjoy them too... *g*
