X from [livejournal.com profile] snailbones! Bit tricky this, cos my bookshelves are all in fragmented bits around the room at the moment (and really are storage boxes...) But let's see what I can do - I'll start from the highest ones, and count to 27 that way! *g*
Stardust(NeilGaiman)
And the winner is... Stardust by Neil Gaiman, that I read for my Once Upon A Time Challenge, way back in April. It seems so long ago, now! It was the sixteenth book I'd read in 2014 (I'm on my seventieth now), and the first for the challenge, in fact. I liked it, though it read as self-conscious... The cover, simple as it is, is gorgeous too... *g*

I've had a bit of a Neil Gaiman year this year, which started when I borrowed The Graveyard Book from my sister when I was at her place in Australia, and loved it to death. It's still my favourite, though I liked Ocean at the End of the Lane alot too, and of course Fortunately, the Milk!

What about you - what's currently the 27th book on your shelf? *g*

The answer to that is 'which shelf?' Heehee. So I chose the shelf which has the most coherence and doesn't alter much which is my travel book shelf. And for that I came up with Clear Waters Rising by Nicholas Crane (he of Coast) in which he recounts his walk across Europe.

Heee - yes, it turned out that just one of my "shelves" (the top of the wardrobe) held more than enough books for me to count along to 27... *g* Oh, but how I long for the day when I can get my own "travel shelf" out! Hopefully the next step on from my next move!

I had to go and look up Clear Waters Rising, and it looks quite good - have you read that one yet?

No, I haven't read Clear Waters Rising yet, despite being a huge fan of the programme, Coast. I also have Nick Crane's Two Degrees West in which he walks around England... also unread. I'm thinking that if I do the Mount TBR challenge again next year I might confine the books I read to either just 'travel' books or possibly 'non-fiction' to give myslef a little more scope. I have 'loads' to read on my shelves.

Like she said {points up}. I have three big bookcases in this room. Taking the top shelf of the bookcase on the furthest left, I come up with "Decorating Australian Houses" which is *quite* out of date now, but still an interesting browse. The top shelf of the bookcase on the right gives me Alain De Botton's "The Architecture of Happiness" which I have yet to read. Hmm, another one on the "to read" pile!

What worries me, is that the assumption is that people will only have one bookshelf... unless it was a typo and they meant "bookshelves" (as in a bookcase)...

And oooh for Decorating Australian Houses - I love reading older decorating books and seeing how tastes have changed! I like the sound of The Architecture of Happiness too - you'll have to read it and let me know if there is one! Although now I have the song in my head ...sees angels in the architecture, spinning in infinity...hallelujah! If you'll be my bodyguard..." That bit always seems quite happy!

Same here. *points up, too*

I chose the pne next to the sofa, which incidentally include my Dick Francis books. *gg*
title or description

And the winner is "Straight" by Dick Francis. Not really the english version, but I guess it wouldn't say much to you.

As fab as it can get. *ggg*
I met my husband on a sailing trip and we're both in love with Lighthouses and the sea and sailboats.

There were only two shelfes, so I had to put the rest in by myself. Which was fun, kinda... *gg*

Thank you! Other people's bookshelves are pretty much the thing I check out first when I go to somebody's home for the first time. I'd love to know if you could correctly guess much about a person from their bookshelves, other than obvious things like they're into geology or whatever.

I haven't read Stardust, or very much at all by Gaiman, though what I have read I've enjoyed immensely. And blimey! You're on your 70th book of the year? I feel so inadequate *g*

I just had a quick squint at the nearest bookshelf to me, and the 27th book from the top is The Press by Papas, probably from my dad's collection... I not only live with my own appalling number of books, but I have my parents' and grandparents' books too. One day I'm simply going to vanish under them all.

Yes! They played a major part in my deciding to move to this house in Somerset too - she had Neil Gaiman there, which I figured was a good sign... *g* Wouldn't it be a fun experiment, to try and match people to their bookshelves.... a far better tv game show than most of what we're fed... *g*

My mum's and my grandad's books are in my storage unit, but one day... Hmmn, you know, I never wondered about my dad having books or not, I don't think he really did... I wonder if he ever did, and left them in South Africa, or if he was just never bookish (I don't think I remember him reading at all - but he was a farmer, so it didn't seem like a missing thing, because he was busy with all sorts of other things... he certainly read the newspaper, and he had reading glasses, so I never thought "my dad doesn't read", it was more... just not something you saw him doing from books... Oh, now I'm all thoughtful!

Use the books to prop the bookshelves up, you can make a sort of structural cave to save you vanishing... *g*

I too suffer from the common problem of too many book shelves! #27 on the bedroom book shelf is "When True Night Falls" - the middle book in "The Coldfire Trilogy" by C.S. Friedman. #27 in the living room is "The Chronicles of Malus Darkblade" by Dan Abnett and Mike Lee. Both series feature very dark anti-hero types.

I counted along the bookshelf above my head and the 27th book, rather portentously, is a Collins guide called Improve Your Writing Skills which I didn't even know I had (yes, I'm sure it shows!)... now I'm rather enjoying reading the part called 100 Clichés to Avoid like the Plague *g*

Oh - heeeee! Definitely portentous though - I'm looking forward to more of your writing! *g*
