Seen first as done by [livejournal.com profile] moth2fic, and now it's all through my flist, and not only am I still awake, but I've thought of ten books! I actually have a similar question to answer for the book meme I was doing ages ago - [livejournal.com profile] ailcia gave me Q. Quote From A Book That Inspires You/Gives You Feelings, and I've been taking ages trying to work out which one. So I shall do this meme first, cos it's quicker... *g*

Rules: List ten books that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard – they don’t have to be “right” or “great” works, just the ones that have touched you. I've put them in approximate reading order...

WumpWorldBill Peet books - When I was in Grade 5/6 at school, I had a teacher who would read picture books to us. The first time he did it we rolled our eyes, and then he pointed out to us that just because something was called a children's book and had pictures, didn't mean that it didn't still say important, interesting, wonderful things. Lots of the books he read were by Bill Peet. I especially remember The Wump World. Another picture book author I remember strongly is Charles Keeping (sorry, is that cheating...? *g*)

Famous Five by Enid Blyton - I loved these books so much when I was a kid! I'd get home from school, throw myself on the bed, and just read and read and read... A group of friends off having adventures together, in the wilds of England - what more could a girl want? I wanted that!

Mandy(smll)Mandy by Julie Edwards - Mandy was one of the oldest children at the orphanage, and she longed for a place of her own. One day she climbs over the orphanage wall, and comes across an abandoned house. She immediately decides to make it her home. I loved the descriptions of what Mandy did to make her house home, and even now I remember how torn she was between what she wanted, and knowing that some of the things she was doing were wrong. (Hmmn - come to think of it, this is all a bit appropriate right now, maybe I should just keep my eye out for somewhere secret and abandoned!) Also, I've always thought this cover was gorgeous...

...and eight more )

[livejournal.com profile] caffyolay has given me A... and although I'm rolling my eyes at whoever worded the meme, this is rather a cool think-y one. And I think - I think that it really has to be the author of these books:
ChildrenOfCherryTreeFarm FarawayTree WishingChair
Because there were all the Famous Five books, and all the Five Find-Outers, and all the Secret Seven, the Adventure books, the various wee series that were published as hardbacks to match the set in the pictures here - and we had dozens of those, it felt like, that I loved. So... surely it must be Enid Blyton!

Hmmn - second runner-up... well, there's Patrick O'Brian of course, because there are 20 Aubrey/Maturin books. But then, how many books did Agatha Christie write, because I've read most of hers (though apparently she wrote 67 mysteries, could I really have read most of them?). Who else...? Elinor M. Brent-Dyer, the Chalet School books! Terry Pratchett must be up there... Robert Heinlein perhaps. Oh - Elizabeth Peters, for Amelia Peabody, though I got caught up in life, and I'm five behind. I should get those out of my storage and start again too... *g* There must be more authors I've read lots of - I expect they'll come to me. *g*

What about you?

X from [livejournal.com profile] snailbones! Bit tricky this, cos my bookshelves are all in fragmented bits around the room at the moment (and really are storage boxes...) But let's see what I can do - I'll start from the highest ones, and count to 27 that way! *g*
Stardust(NeilGaiman)
And the winner is... Stardust by Neil Gaiman, that I read for my Once Upon A Time Challenge, way back in April. It seems so long ago, now! It was the sixteenth book I'd read in 2014 (I'm on my seventieth now), and the first for the challenge, in fact. I liked it, though it read as self-conscious... The cover, simple as it is, is gorgeous too... *g*

I've had a bit of a Neil Gaiman year this year, which started when I borrowed The Graveyard Book from my sister when I was at her place in Australia, and loved it to death. It's still my favourite, though I liked Ocean at the End of the Lane alot too, and of course Fortunately, the Milk!

What about you - what's currently the 27th book on your shelf? *g*

[livejournal.com profile] miwahni gave me W next - Worst Bookish Habit!

Hmmmn... probably buying them...
2014-08-16 01Bookpile 2014-08-16 02Bookpile 2014-08-16 03Bookpile
Here, for instance, are three of my current waiting-to-be-read piles - and it should probably be borne in mind that I consider most of my books to be in storage, and my room to be relatively bare... As I was saying to [livejournal.com profile] caffyolay just yesterday, I buy books and then they languish... but I will get around to reading them - I will! I should use the library much more - but I do the same thing with libraries too, I borrow books in a fit of enthusiasm, and then they languish until their due dates - often the final I've-renewed-them-as-often-as-I-can due date, too - come around... It's not that I don't want to read them (or any book), I just have to be in the right mood for the right book at the right time...

Probably the book habit that people would think is much worse, though, is something I've always done with paperbacks - only my own, and only ordinary paperbacks... I bookmark them by turning the corners... *g* I just really don't have a problem with it, with ordinary everyday-read books, and I always treat them well other than that - I don't do tatty uncared for books. But I do turn over the corners, if there's nothing else around to use as a bookmark...

What about you? Bad habits with books...?

This one's an easy one (thank you [livejournal.com profile] gilda_elise!) - although it turns out also slightly spooky! As soon as I saw the prompt I thought Temeraire by Naomi Novak!
Temeraire(NaomiNovik)
There have been seven books in the series so far, and I've been eagerly awaiting the eighth, and periodically checking to see when it will be published in paperback. No luck, no luck, no luck - I hate getting embroiled in a series before it's finished!

Then yesterday I had to nip into town to return a library book, paused at the display stand to see if they had any summer holiday books, and there it was! In paperback. Blood of the Tyrants, not only published and available but in the library! I actually rushed off to buy it instead (cos it's a series I will - and already have done - read and re-read), only to pause when I got there because I realised that it was so long ago I read Crucible of Gold that I at least needed to re-read that one... and perhaps even the rest of the series, so... ack! And of course the books are in storage. So if I can hang on until I move, and get them out and re-read them, that would be clever. But... I've been checking on and off for publication for ages, and suddenly, as soon as I decide to use it for this meme - there it is!

It would be even more clever to wait until Novik has finished the entire series, mind you - I really hate waiting for books, because I've often lost the impetus and not completed, even though I wanted to. The Wheel of Time and Outlander and even Harry Potter series were a bit spoiled for me by that - I've still not read their most recent/final books because I just had to wait too long, needed to go back and re-read, and... just haven't yet. Actually it's the same for me with tv series - I'm now caught waiting for the next series of Game of Thrones (though I'm going off the gratuitous sexism in that one a bit - not that sexism is ever not gratuitous, but surely these days it's even more so...), Grimm and now Arrow - I've only got one more ep of S1 left! Maybe it's lack of practice - we don't usually have to wait to see the next installment of a tv programme any more, so I've got out of the patience for it...

So... anyone else have a Series You Started and Need to Finish (or two, or...? *g*)
byslantedlight: (Bookshelf colour (grey853).)
I pinched a book meme from [livejournal.com profile] mescott yesterday, cos I've not done a meme for aaaaages, and cos it looked kind of fun, and then, being me, I had to make it more complicated, and decided I'd make my answers as separate posts so that other people could join in too, if they want. *g*

[livejournal.com profile] etain_antrim gave me "O" to start with - one book that you've read multiple times. Which is a bit tricky for me actually, because as with tv shows and films and fanfic, when I like something I often read it more than once. I could easily say The Larton Chronicles, but perhaps the meme means published books. So I could say Point of Hopes, but then I'd have to say the whole series so far really, and I've already posted happily about them. I have a whole series that I'm not re-reading again just yet, no matter how much I want to, because there are more than 20 books in it. Another one is going to come up under S... *g*Hmmmn!

I mean, re-reading is why I have an entire storage unit that is largely full of books... Umm...

Okay, how about this one:
LOTR_book_covers
Lord of the Rings (not that this is my copy, which is tucked away in my storage - I may have to get it out again soon though, come to think of it. *g*)!

I read The Hobbit at the end of the summer holidays when I was eleven, and I remember having to wait until I got to my new high school to look for Lord of the Rings - and then they didn't want to lend it to me, because they thought I was too young for it - but I convinced them, and they let me, and I loved it... *g*

I think I next re-read it when I was at uni - and I know my now-ex gave me my copy for my birthday one year. He and his brother used to play LotR scrabble - far too detail-oriented for me, I'm afraid! I loved the rush and sweep and magic and adventure of it all rather than all the historical and technical detail. And I still do. *g* I think the last time I re-read it was a year or two (or three...) ago, after I'd watched the films again. I didn't buy a copy when I was in NZ, although I was very tempted to do so... *g* I think I did buy another copy of The Hobbit though, and re-read that too.

They're just such brilliant books, with so many different things to read and imagine and think about - I can't even imagine only reading them once. Even thinking about them is giving me the urge to read them again now... *vbg*

What about you - what's One Book That You Have Read Multiple Times?
byslantedlight: (Bookshelf colour (grey853).)
Day the Next )

And the day after - for which I did take photos. *g* I had to nip down to the hospital again, and decided to walk there. The spring and early summer flowers of last time are mostly gone, but look what's out!
2014-08-13 01Blackberries
There's been an autumn feel to the air for a few days now, and blackberries on bushes make me happy!

Here's my destination - a completely changed place from when I was first walking along the (no-longer-existing) path to work every day... (Just tried to find pics to compare, but can't - I should have tagged better...) The two biggest buildings on either side, and the big road leading to them didn't exist!
2014-08-13 02Hospital 2014-08-13 03skateboardbirdgraffiti
And I loved the skateboarder bird graffiti!

And then later, another of those look-out-the-window-and-ooooh moments!
2014-08-13 04Sunset

And all of that started as a much longer wittering post that actually only I would really have been interested in, so I deleted it (in case you did read it and wonder now what's going on). The 100 Days of Happy was a much clearer focus! *g*

In the meantime, [livejournal.com profile] mescott posted a book question meme which I thought looked quite interesting, so if anyone fancies giving me a letter from it, that might be fun... hmmn, maybe they'd even make cool individual posts... you know, focussed. *g*
