Hello - are you bored with seeing these pop up yet? Ah well, here's another one anyway... The lads are lurking in my head too - I think I've decided on my story for the big bang. And I've re-read Forever True and The Assassin's Daughter so far for my holiday reading. I adore Forever True, even though if you told me the plot I'd say no-no-no!
Good morning, beach in Wales...

Leaving Wales (via Snowdonia)... and back in England (hello, Shropshire).

Of chestnut candles and dark, walking woods!

Blist's Hill Victorian Town, Ironbridge Gorge. The intro vid was beautifully done, and I rather wanted to buy a copy, but sadly it wasn't on dvd - the first pic is just a quick glimpse.

All in all, a good afternoon's wanderings! It's funny how familiar the Victorian houses and rooms and paraphernalia feel too - maybe some previous life... *g*
Walk back to the YHA, along lovely green paths. Loved the determination of this dandelion.

And just green, green, green!
The YHA - tonight's home.

And the view up the canal.
And back down again...

The scenery's changed a bit from Neolithic tombs and Medieval castles - we've skipped five hundred years or so, and now it's all go-industrial-revolution-go!
Then a lazy night in a room of my own - in preparation for three nights in a dorm, in Manchester... I'm not entirely sure this bit is going to feel like a holiday - Manchester's changed alot since I lived there, and I don't know it any more. I also suspect there'll be a lot of hanging around waiting for brother and co. and trying not to feel frustrated... oh well - maybe the YHA will be in a more comfortable spot that I'm imagining, and I'll manage to visit cool places. Also, tomorrow is Jodrell Bank! Yeay! *g*

Date: Monday, 23 May 2016 09:04 am (UTC)Bleeding hearts always look so exotic and, I discovered when I looked them up to see if they had any other common names, are part of the poppy family. I love poppies. And dandelions, come to that.
I used to live in Shropshire, many, many moons ago. Before the lads were even a twinkle in Cowley's eye. Which might be why some deranged people think they can hear a touch of Scouse in my accent. It's actually 100% Scouse free, despite my near miss at being born there. But every now and then some misguided soul will swear they can hear some. My personal theory is they're misplacing the odd Shropshire-ish inflection. Although I sound about as Shropshire as David Tennant's Doctor. Tin ears, some folk.
It all looks wonderful.
I've not read 'Forever True' or the other one, but I notice there's a Forever True on AO3. It's an AU, according to that. Same story? I looked it up on Fanlore, bit dubious.
AO3, if it is the same story, implies there's a sequel and I don't like reading half of anything. Even if the story is complete in itself. I read all of What Katy Did Next and Jo's adventures after Little Women.
And what the hell is the Metropolitan London CTD? And Doyle an Inspector? I like the lads because they're down to earth, they're at the bottom of the pile. They're irresponsible because they can be, they have no responsibilities. Once you start heading up a team you have to start being someone else. You get glimpses of that in canon with Bodie sometimes.
Still, loads of people reference it as a work they like - I think S2K has said so on occasion (I may have invented that). And I have no problem with the lads being married.
On the other hand (that's at least three hands so far), I don't like to start something and then not finish it. Mmmm.
I don't like the lads with money, Bodie's mercenary treasure trove, Doyle's endlessly successful start ups. I like the lads as average. Having to worry about bills, getting cross when their pride and joy gets damaged and not being able to do things because they can't afford them. Mmmm again.
I suppose Inspector's not ridiculously high in the pecking order and he'd still worry about bills. But Doyle's a PC, a troublesome one, who can't just shut up and sit down. I like that about him. He always loses something for me when he's not snarling at authority. Mmmm....

Date: Monday, 23 May 2016 06:59 pm (UTC)Yes, it's that Forever True. Don't worry about the CTD though, it's just a typo. Doyle is in the CID. He's a Detective Inspector in the story, but I think that's an authorial error (she's not from the UK), he acts more like a DS, and he's not in charge of any group or team. Presumably she needed to advance him a little further than DC since he didn't join CI5. There's no sequel, its a complete story in itself, and no need for a sequel that I can see. Neither of the lads has miraculous money, neither of them are invincible brilliant heroes, they're very much ordinary working men dealing with extraordinary CI5-type situations. And Doyle is a troublesome cop who can't just shut up and sit down, so he's completely in character. So your worries are all groundless! Whether you'll actually like the story - well, who knows except you. *g*

Date: Monday, 23 May 2016 07:14 pm (UTC)Not really lived and worked everywhere - still plenty of places to try!
CID makes a lot more sense! Although, if the author had invented a new dept., I wouldn't mind so much so long as it sounded plausible. Counter something or other maybe?
I might give that a go then - I haven't read a long story for a while. Although I have oodles of BB still to get through. Who knows if I will like it? But then I never thought I'd like some of the stuff I read for the Reading Room - but I'm glad I tried some of it now - and even the stuff I wasn't so keen on, I'm not sorry I read.
All I need now is a nice relaxing holiday - guess I'll just have to make do with Spring cleaning and a Bank Holiday :0).

Date: Monday, 23 May 2016 10:40 am (UTC)I love the pictures of the woods! So dark and mysterious. The Victorian town looks interesting. I take it people live in it. Or are the pigs rented? lol The stairway looks intriguing.

Date: Monday, 23 May 2016 07:01 pm (UTC)The woods were beautiful - just the walk from the car park to Blists Hill, too! The pigs certainly live there, and I presume that there are people living on site (or else very near it, just for management sake)... It was fun to visit, definitely, though I always wish these places sold fiction books set in the time period too.!

Date: Thursday, 26 May 2016 01:49 pm (UTC)Life is still very bumpy around here - hoping things smooth out soon.
I am on Hunted by Devils (HG) as my middle-of-the-night reading. Another one of those heart burners. I was surprised by how much I had the two characters confused - I was convinced that Griffin was B and Kilroy was D...

Oh, and Hunted by Devils... *sighs* D'you know, I've been wondering what fic to read next - maybe that should be my story! I was thinking about it just the other day, in fact... It is funny that we can mix things up from stories we've read ages ago, isn't it... But then you've probably not seen Cassidy to be able to picture Griffin, I think? So if you're thinking of Bodie's character to start with, and imagining your favourite hero in the story... *g*
