Turns out posting pics is a hard habit to break... *g* I went out for a quick walk today, just after 4pm, realising just in time that it wasn't just the overcast day that was making it feel dark - the clocks went back last weekend! And lovely as it was to have an extra hour to play in, it's getting properly dark around 5pm now. Waaah!

By contrast, look where I was this time last year... and weirdly enough I think these pics were taken around 4-5pm-ish, too!

New Zealand, of course, #ThatTree, Wanaka, with [livejournal.com profile] alicambs and Mr Alicambs! Lovely, lovely days...

I've just finished work for the day, tomorrow is forecast rain and wind and nastiness all day, and I'm rather looking forward to reading, I think... *g*

How about you?

Well, it's my last day here in my current-temporary-house, before I move a few streets down to my own wee place at last. I think it's taken me a few days after the whole whirlwind of yes-no-yes before I could start getting excited, but I think I finally am... *g* Moving house tomorrow! (Honestly, how many times have I said that over the last two years...) Let's see if this time can be for a bit longer... *g*

Here's current views from my office - the window behind me (it's all single-glazing, and I'm huddled up in scarf and blanket, even though the heating's theoretically on!), and the view from my office (i.e. where I'm huddled *g*)
2018-12-14 01WindowCold 2018-12-14 02ViewFromOffice
Even though the new place is rather worryingly all electric, and all free-standing heaters, I'm hopeful that it might actually be a bit warmer!

PS - I thought it was fixed, but I can't get into some people's journals again - waaah! And I remembered at last that the exact same thing happened earlier this year, in January (and the exact same journals too, which makes me think it's definitely server-based.)

So - [livejournal.com profile] msmoat - yerch for Tumblr porn when you don't want it! I must admit I've not seen ads on lj for years, cos I got a paid account for just that reason, but I'd hate to think of it being cluttered up with muck like that (and as you know, I'm not against porn per se - but it should be a choice to read/see it, not via advertising!) It's definitely things like that which keep me hugging lj close, and glaring at various other forums...

2018-12-12 ChristmasCards
Collected the post from my friend this evening, and it hasn't half cheered up the mantelpiece, even if it will only be for a couple of days (before I find a new home for them all!) *g*

I managed to find a wee tree today, and got my fandomcards mostly done, and a bit of clearing up, and even caught the last Doctor Who of the series. So nice to have weekends back! And actually I'm here for nearly two more weeks before I have to move again, so there is a bit more relaxing and settling in that I can manage - then I'll have a weekend away somewhere Christmas-y in the gap between houses, then housesit for D over Christmas itself, before housesitting for S until New Year - and then back here, until either my new Stables are ready or I get fed up waiting, whichever comes first! I might even get to write an actual proper catch-up post...

How're you doing? *g*

2018-12-08 TauntonBaubles
Such a luxurious day - the first one not working for aaaages! I slept in (well, cos I'd been up until 3am finishing work...) and then pottered, and then went down to Taunton to do some shopping, and of course it was all Christmas decorations-y.

Also, I've decided that despite being peripatetic over Christmas, I am going to have a Christmas tree - I'll find a little living one in a pot, and just move it around with me. *g*

Turns out the local church is very pretty indeed, inside - a friend asked if I'd go to a Christmas choir concert with her, because she wanted to see what they were like (she sings), so I did. It was very village-choir-singing-carols, and a nice excuse to just sit and gaze about me, while trying not to fret because I had a headache all day and still needed to finish half the day's work.. *g* (Blimey - and I've just read that the church dates from the fourteenth century - I shall have to find out more! ... Okay, and the village is in the Domesday book - well I didn't know that - and there's a bronze age hillfort nearby. Cool. *g*)

A bit more festive again today - it was the bookgroup's Christmas do tonight, and here are some of us walking home past the village Christmas tree. Rain might be wet and grey in the daytime, but it makes for good photos at night. *g*

I didn't go outside at all today, and this was one reason why... The other two reasons were Job 1 and Job 2 though - but I managed to meet two mega-deadlines, so yeay me! And Job 2 is now finished, so perhaps there will be time for other things in between getting on with Job 1. Like working out whether I can post tomorrow... *g*

Let's hope tomorrow's day is a bit brighter, too!

Out and about chasing down some internet this morning - took ages, and then I was behind with work and tomorrow is All the Deadlines, and ack! But I did manage two pics - one of a place I was about in, and the second the place I'm currently coming home to. You can tell I'm back in Somerset by the ammonite embedded in the stonework!

Winter sun this morning. I have to say, today has mostly sucked though - went to see how my agreed-new-place was getting on, cos its being done up, only to find out that due to various crises I wasn't going to be able to move in on the 17th Dec after all, it'll be in the new year! So waaah... I was sooooo looking forward to living out of a home again instead of a suitcase, and especially to getting it all cosy for Christmas... :( I was gonna get a tree, and put up Pros cards, and... And... Waaaah!

Today's proofreading was awkward too, and now I'm behind on marking... And it's just taken me over an hour to return the assignment I melted my eyes for (and rather crucially my invoice...) because my internet is down in every direction except on my phone! My pocket wifi ran out, and my antivirus firewall is for some reason blocking the weak WiFi signal I get where I'm staying right now. Gaaah!

Woe! Woe is me!

On the bright side, I did take a break for dinner and (since I couldn't catch up on Dr Who any more, what with no internet) I watched Purging and remembered how fab our lads are again... *g*
byslantedlight: (Default)
Went for a winter's walk around the village today, to see what I could see - and what was this ghosty thing in the tree above the river across from the cemetery (can you see her in the first pic, all curled up and grumpy at being spotted?)...?
Surprise ghosty-grey cat!

I have so got out of posting to lj, and I hate that - so here's another attempt to do something about it. *g* My original plan was to have a go at a Photo Advent of Christmas-ish pics, and then I remembered [livejournal.com profile] scene_again, and then I thought I'd add those posts too, just to see the difference over the years...

"...this fine first of December, under an unclouded sky, and in a room full of sunshine..." William Cowper, 1789 (Buckinghamshire)

"Towards dark, a colourless fog, snow almost gone, and ground soft-oozy underfoot, as though the earth's skin slipped as you trod. A very dark night: no wind; church bells dinning, and myself chilly and afraid of the misty evening." George Sturt, 1890 (Surrey)

Grey-clouded and not cold today - though it's December, so not exactly warm either. There was rain in the morning, but it took itself away and turned out to be a good night for the village's tree-lighting ceremony, followed by mince pies and mulled wine in the church afterwards. They tried for carol singing, but it somehow didn't really happen. Attention was elsewhere, on being a village, somehow.

So not quite as cold this year as in previous years, I see!

This morning - the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, which had an excellent museum

And a good Maori Cultural performance!

And now I'm pausing on the west coast...

I was all set to post as I went along today - only to find that the very Northlands wasn't giving me internet. Waah! Oh well, let's see what I can do in the traditional way before I go to bed... *g*

I set off nice and early, because Cape Reinga is about three hours from Paihia, and I thought I might want to stop at places on the way too. In the end I did that on the way back, and it worked really well. So I headed north, again with no view of the sea, but rounded hills, the most winding road I've been on over some mountains (and I've driven over mountains in Greece) - this was like a slalom! Past the most gorgeous red trees, and wild turkeys! Which I couldn't stop to take photos of, unfortunately, but I promise - wild turkeys! I hadn't been expecting them... *g*

My trip this year is all about oceans meeting! At Cape Leeuwin in Western Australia it was where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. Today at Cape Reinga, by the lighthouse, it was where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. I'm not sure I've ever seen the place where seas meet before, and now twice in one trip. *g* See the waves going in two different directions, towards each other? How cool is that! Not to mention how spectacular the views were in general.

And more pics... *g* )

Hello! I have been promising a proper post and not doing it, but now it's Sunday morning, I have no work deadlines until Tuesday night, and I have half an hour before the SuperShuttle picks me up to head for the airport where I'll pick up a car and then drive north!

I've been in Auckland for six days, which seems a bit odd when most people fly through on their way to other places, but I wanted a bit of time to breathe after the chaos of family in Australia, and to be able to look around as well as get on with work. I wanted to get a bit of a feel for the place, rather than just glancing at it. So I did look around, and this is what I saw... *g*

Sunday
I walked down to the waterfront, where there was a boat show going on, then to have a look in the Maritime Museum - and I couldn't resist going for a "heritage sail" around the bay. I even got to help hoist the sails when we set off! *g* All very beautiful...

It's going to be a hard walk back up the hill, but worth it for this peaceful spot, on my last day in Auckland.

Finally time to myself again - just as I'm about to fly to New Zealand. Family! Some nice times too though.
But phew... I have sucked at photo-a-day, cos I ended up with lots to show you and so didn't get show you any! Maybe I can try again in NZ...

How're you doing?

Finally! I'm up to yesterday!
2018-09-22 Coows 2018-09-22 Sheep
Went for a wee drive with mum, and although there were gum trees and all again, there was also this rather fab... critter with a white body and black head (okay, it was a sheep, although it's got a long neck for a sheep, we both thought!) - in a field with some also-fab Highland coos! *g*
byslantedlight: (Default)
This is a dreadful picture, so stare at it through slanted eyes, and imagine that you're going outside to hang washing on the clothesline, and smell the loveliest smell... *g*
