(Maybe bribery will help)

...a Pros pic or article posted or drabble written (your choice which) for anyone who'll tell me their opinion/thoughts/feelings about Windows 10 compared to Windows 7!

As soon as I decide one way, I change my mind and decide the other way instead.

Who's used Windows 10? Do you like it better or worse than Windows 7? Has it slowed your computer/laptop down? Sped it up? Neither, but you like it anyway? Neither but you hate it anyway?

I know some of you have found yourselves with Windows 10 unexpectedly - now that you've used it for a while, what d'you think?

Please tell meeeeeee!

No bribery needed!

I've only used 10 on other people's machines, and it's... okay. Nothing special, just Win 7 with a fancy-pantsy front end that, after the debacle of Win 8, they now allow you to get rid of so it looks just like 7 again. Which doesn't seem like a great advance to me, but there you go!

On other people's machines I've been asked to help because older programs have gone missing, refused to work etc. Mostly there have been work-arounds after a bit of poking, but again, not seeing any great advantage to that either! One friend spent a glorious three hours on the phone to support because her Sage accounting got buggered by Win 10 - the dates all rolled back to something odd, which didn't make her happy. It was fixable, but again, could have done without the fright or the loss of work hours.

I'm avoiding it until my present Win 7 machine gives up the ghost - I don't want to spend the extra money on buying a faster machine to cope with the extra processing power Win 10 needs - and I run several really old programs that I'm not convinced will make the jump to Win 10 - again, that'll cost me a small fortune to try to replace.

Sorry, long answer, and I don't even use it much, so I'm probably horribly biased against it. But the little contact I've had leaves me meh.

Hmmn, that's mostly what I've been thinking - my laptop's getting on now, so I was assuming it'd do more upset than good, and have been ignoring any reminders, but then I read various updated reviews of W10 and they seemed to be saying that it could make things a bit faster (though mostly on start-up, and once I'm on then I'm on... *g*) I don't use many old programmes, cos I mostly lost them when I had new laptop anyway, but I'd hate to lose any I have still got hanging around... Although W10 isn't supposed to need any more processing power than W7, the specs are supposed to be the same...

It's useful to hear from someone who's used it though - that's what I'd like to do really, and not just in some shop demo mode... and you can roll back, but if it's gonna bugger things up, then I'd worry they'd stay buggered up through the rollback...

Oh, just hmmmn! *g* And thank you!

You sure you don't need a bribe? Call it a reward? *g*

I like it far better than 8. Which isn't hard...

It slowed down my laptop, but just while starting, it takes ages until it's on. But then it's on and everything works fine.
I had trouble turning my laptop off at the beginning. It started right up again, sometimes the laptop was working all night.
It took me some time to fix that, but it was quite easy, once I asked the right questions.
All my programs still work, one even better than on 7.
And I found it very, very easy to switch, because the programs were just there, all my stuff was still where I had it in 7. Changing from XP to 8 was such a huge nuisance,.
There are some add ons I could live without, that I can't turn off, like the cloud drive, which I'm not using at all, because I have my own personal cloud. So it's a bit annoying. But the rest is fine, as Snailbones said, just 7 with fancy stuff added.

A friend of mine is alright with it, too. We tried to install a video cutting program on laptops from other friends, one with win10 and one with win 7, it didn't work on either, because the machines were a bit outdated, nothing to do with the system.

All in all, everybody I asked or heard talking about was alright with it, once they got it working properly. Which is a problem every time a system is updated, so nothing new there.

All in all I liked 7 very much, but 10 isn't bad either, I would switch again. I do hope that helps.

And.... Mr. Maus likes it, too. His laptop was the one we switched from XP to 8.
Now he's got a new one with 10 and is so much more relaxed about everything, because everything is where it was before 8 and not hidden in some folds and behind drapes.

His laptop is not the newest either, we got it from my brother, but it worked fine from the start.

I think if I'd had Win8 I wouldn't have thought twice about changing, I'd've just done it - but actually what you say is why I'm havering - because I'm not sure Win10 is different-good enough to make it worth losing Win7 where I know and like where everything is... I'm kind of curious about the Cortana thing, cos it might crossover nicely with my phone to remind me about things, but otherwise I'm less keen on the idea of things like not being able to hide the Cloud, and my computer being controlled by the system rather than by me (although on the other hand, the system likely knows much more about most things than me! *g*)

So... oh, still not sure, now! *g* If you'd still had 7, would you have switched? *g*

I'd switch again.
It's almost no difference, and I hope to keep my laptop for another five years, and I rather fear the thing they did with XP, where the support just expired.

On the other hand, them knowing so much is quite concerning.

I've never seen this article before, and I'm sorry to say, but I don't much care for the things it says.
I'll translate it tomorrow.

I'd worry about support expiring too - I think Win7 has got until 2020 - but I suspect I'll need a new laptop before then, because my lovely one is definitely more than three years old, and my previous laptops have all expired shortly after that... though I don't want this one to! I like it's lovely big Scrabble-keys, and the way my wrists rest on it, and... and... *crosses fingers*

I just switched at work a couple of weeks ago, and it's mostly ok. The settings did default back to US almost everything, so my database suddenly started showing dates in US format which threw me rather (& meant most of my reports wouldn't work properly). Once I actually managed to locate the 'change date/time' setting, it was very easy to fix, though. We were about to lose support on our very old versions of Windows so had no choice but to update, otherwise I probably wouldn't have bothered, but to be fair it has been a lot less traumatic than I was expecting.

Hello! How nice to see you! *g*

It really bugs me that it all defaults to US English when things are changed - not just Win10, but anything... it'll detect my time zone, but it won't stop trying to force another language on me! *g* But yeah, I guess that should be a simple fix, just annoying... Good to hear it all worked otherwise though - I guess I'd mostly expect a smooth change, which is why I waited the year to decide, but... oh, hmmn! The question is, will my lovely laptop last long enough to make it awkward if I'm still on Win7... erm... *havers still* *g*

Er, El Capitan. :-)

Actually, I had a laptop that had 8, I believe, on it. And then it got a vile case of The Nasties.
I should update to get any remaining fics, etc off that machine, but part of me just can't abide the Evil Empire. Or that one, at least.

We have customized operating systems at work, so I haven't seen any 10 anywhere. Really, I'm just not going to be much help, here... :-(

I do have a coworker who's volunteered to install 10 on that sad machine. If I can get around the fear of him finding fic, I might just take him up on it. ;-)

Hee for not being much help! *g* I think if I'd had Win8 I would've just made the change (quite quickly, I suspect *g*), it's having Win7 that's throwing me, cos I like it... And I reckon they're pretty much all evil empires - unless you're 100% techie (or what they seem to be calling a Power User now, which just begs for sparkly capes, if you ask me).

You've only got a couple of days to get Win10 if you want it (and I reckon it'll be way better than 8, but mostly cos it's more like 7, which is where I am now..!) - I reckon you should, if you want it saving. If he's likely to be that wibbly about fic, then I reckon it'd do him some good to see some... *g*

My kidlet says 10 is okay but it's a new machine with it pre-installed. I've heard stories of other folks having problems upgrading, using their already-installed programs and files (mp3s, video) being deleted because 10 thinks they're pirated files. It also will not let you "not" do auto updates unless you click that you are on a metered system and will do them yourself. I've heard about problems with auto updates but for Windows that's always been a concern.

I have one Windows laptop with 8.1 on it but honestly, if I use that at all, it's just for vidding. Otherwise I don't use a Windows machine. It will also collect data from your laptop and take it to some big underground cyberspace facility so they can blackmail you in the future. LOL! (Hey, that's not far from the truth!)

I'm not bothered about it being the new OS when I have to get a new laptop next time, and I'm not worried about auto updates, cos if there are problems they fix them fast, and I'm pretty sure that the Other Type of Computer has auto updates too, it's just that you never hear about them. *g* And they all collect data and take it to the Blackmail Facility, but again, you just don't hear about it on the Other Type of Computer. *g* Don't like the sound of things being deleted though - which is why I don't have a Kindle! And I don't have the Other Type of Computer cos I don't like being corralled into Only One Type, so I don't like idea that MS is heading that way...

If I'd had Win8 I wouldn't have thought twice about upgrading, but I like Win7... hmmn, and hmmn!

I switched voluntarily, because I was curious and stuck with it. Didn't notice any vast improvents, but it's running just fine, mostly.
Mr. Siskiou's comouter was "taken over",  which he really didn't like. We noticed that the microphone on both our computers didn't work anymore after the update and it took me ages to find a driver that worked. It seems to br a common problem.
If you like to decide what windows updates you want to install,  windows 10 is not for you. It just does it, unless you have the pro version.

Yeah, I was careful not to let me computer be taken over... I've heard about the driver issue, if you have older hardware that's less updated. I've got an external webcam that might be messed up, come to think of it, that I like better than the built in one... hmmn, and my headset is pretty old (in the scale of things), I'd forgotten about them. I reckon the printer should be okay, and I'd hope my speakers were, though they're not fancy, so... hmmns!

I'm not too fussed about the automatic updates, cos I mostly had those on automatic anyway. There was just one thing I didn't want auto update on, and turned off... and for the life of me I can't remember now! Something that tried to force a change I didn't like in the new version, and I was waiting until they fixed it... but mostly I figure the updates know more than I do about keeping me secure, so I go with them.

Your "mostly" worries me a bit!

I went from 7 to 10 with *touch wood* no problems. I've changed it so that my desktop looks the same as it did in 7. I don't like the new photo viewer, but that's just personal preference, and there's nothing really wrong with it.

Hee - I like my Win7 deskrop/start menu too! I use the MS Office photo viewer, which I like best (except it doesn't have a straighten facility, and since I apparently lurch attractively to one side all the time I have to go into Picasa and use that one... which I wouldn't like to lose, come to think of it, and might if I changed... hmmn, good point, Batman! *g* I'm not overly worried about having 10 on a new laptop, but I like my old laptop and don't want it to fade yet either, so... hmmn!

I like it. I upgraded a while ago, and although I had a problem, it was a blip that happens to a few people at random, it appears. It was an issue with the user profile not copying over correctly and there is nothing to be done about it. It happens sometimes. It's nothing to do with how much or whether you back your files up - it's internal memory and files to do with the upgrade, not what you've done, so most people are lucky and don't suffer from it, and I did.

I loathed Windows 8 with a passion and uninstalled it. It assumed that everyone had a touchscreen, which I didn't. 8.1, or whatever it was, was better. Windows 10 is far better than that. I like that I have my start button back again - hooray! I ignore Cortana and Edge. I have an iPhone and use Siri, but I would never use Cortana on my laptop because i don't talk to my laptop. I looked into Edge when I upgraded but it didn't do the two things I wanted it to do (can't remember what) so I have ignored it ever since. For all I know, it might be okay now.

I hate the default photo package with 10 so I don't use that, I use Windows Live Photo Gallery, but that's just because I'm used to it.

I haven't found 10 to take up more memory or to be any slower.

I think I was just so prejudiced against 8 that I was never going to take to it. 10 is very like 7 so I am happy again :)

SteveAlderPint Interesting - the first person who's not a bit meh about it! I think if I'd had Win8 I would have changed to Win10 as soon as it came out, bugs and all, but I do like Win7 - and one of the things I like is the start menu! *g* Actually you've hit the nail on the head re: browsers - my IE (which I use for my pro (not Pros *g*) emails etc.) doesn't want to update to the next version, so presumably Edge wouldn't give me the stupid Your browser isn't supported messages for that... I'm more likely to talk to my laptop too, cos I get a lousy phone signal here (gawd help me if I ever need to call for help, the horses won't be bothered!)

I remember when I was working in Cambs., and realised my new work computer had a touch screen monitor - which was pointless, cos I couldn't reach it across the desk anyway, and it was too big to be too close up to!

I think I'll be happy enough to move to Win10 when my lovely laptop fades, and I don't have to deal with the horrid Win8, cos I avoided it like an avoid-y thing, but... hmmn!

Awww! That's lovely, thank you!

I wouldn't be Windows 10's greatest fan, but it's fine, given that you have to have some sort of operating system. I forget why I upgraded now - probably because I'd seen 10 and it reminded me of 7 and I detested 8 so much *g*

You've reminded me - all my peripherals worked fine as well, and one of the things I liked was that there was no fuss and I didn't have to reinstall anything. They were just there again.

Fingers crossed that your laptop carries on for a while yet!

Um.. I upgraded to see and *hated* it. It seemed totally geared up for games and shopping which isn't at all what I use my computer for. I like 7, but my 7 is customised to look like XP more or less so I'm obvs just *too* retro. We got a laptop with it pre-installed as well recently and I spend a week trying to make it likeable before sending it back (there were other reasons too- wasn't JUST the operating system). So personally, it's better than 8. but not as nice as 7. HOpe the next version will be less 'Tabloid'. ;-)

From: [identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com
Jackie-25-11-1978That's exactly one of the things I've wondered about (except I wouldn't have put it half so brilliantly - tabloid!) And I'm a bit worried that it'll try and force things on me that I can't opt out of, like someone's said about Cloud up above, cos if I don't want to use it then I want it to go and hide itself, not keep jumping out at me...

I think if I had a new laptop with it pre-installed I wouldn't be too worried, cos I expect to be grumpy about having to adjust to new things (right down to shampoo bottle designs and different boxes with my favourite biscuits in *g*), but I do like Win7, and my laptop just how it is, so I only want to upgrade if it's going to be better... which is what I'm not sure about, especially the whole tabloid thing... I'm thinking no, now... *g*
